Usually this time of the season we are talking about the high scoring numbers and stats the Boise State offense is producing, but this year is different. It is the Boise State defense that is controlling the tempo and winning the games for the Broncos. In two of the three games Boise State has played it was the defense that was responsible for all the touchdowns. Against Michigan State, safety Jeremy Loane scored on a 43-yard interception return and last Thursday night against BYU it was defensive tackle Mike Atkinson scoring on a 36-yard interception return. Overall through three games the Boise State defense has grabbed six interceptions and recovered three fumbles for a positive turnover margin of 1.67 per game, tying for 13th-nationally. Another side note on how affective the defense has been is its red zone prevention. Through three games, Boise State opponents are averaging just two trips inside the red zone. Opponents averaged 1.9 trips inside the 20 yardline in 2011, and 2.2 red zone opportunities per game in 2010.

The bright spot for Boise State is that they are 2-1 and the schedule favors them for a winning season. Under Coach Peterson the offense will eventually finds its rhythm and develop a more consistent level of play. This weekend Boise State faces a defense ranked 95th in the nation and should put up some points taking the pressure off the defense.
