This week’s Boom or Bust centers around B-Mets right-hander Erik Goeddel, who was our 24th round pick in the 2010 MLB Draft. Goeddel, who is slated to start the B-Mets game later today, is 8-3 this season with a 3.94 ERA in 89.0 innings. He has struck out 86 while walking 39. Goeddel has a history of strong numbers in the minor leagues, coming off a 3.41 ERA in Advanced-A St. Lucie in ’12 and a 3.24 ERA in Savannah and the GCL team in ’11. John Bernhardt: After a slow start, B-Met right-handed starting pitcher Erik Goeddel is off and running. Following four straight winless starts, Goeddel has been flying since May, chalking up a 5-0 win/loss mark before the halfway point of the season. Over that span, Goeddel had a 3.46 ERA, held opponents to a .216 batting averaged and fanned 8.2 batters per nine innings thrown. The B-Met program cites an altered grip on Goeddel’s change-up as a big part of the improvement. Goeddel is noted for an effective breaking ball, too. He’s second on the t...

Pitchf/x Shows That At Worst, Wheeler Will Turn Out To Be A Useful Pitcher

So far, Zack Wheeler is walking a man every other inning and not striking out too many more, and he’s doing it while throwing little beside fastballs. That according to Tim Marchman of the Wall Street Journal who did some digging and found some historical comps for the Mets rookie righthander. Marchman found 29 comps and according to Pitchf/x data from FanGraphs, even if Wheeler...

Dear Mets front office: What’s your definition of overwhelmed?

You have certainly read reports that the Mets would need to be “overwhelmed” to trade Bobby Parnell (who Detroit and Boston have interest in) but what you may not have read is that they need to be equally “overwhelmed” to trade the thirty five year old rental, Marlon Byrd. Parnell is only 28 and looks to have shaped into a fairly reliable closer.  He’s got two controlled...

Germen Makes Case To Remain On Roster When Turner Is Activated

With the Mets all but set to activate Justin Turner from the disabled list today before they begin their series with the Atlanta Braves, many believed that reliever Gonzalez Germen would get the heave-ho. No way… Little was made of the rookie reliever when the Mets tabbed him to provide a fresh arm for worn-out bullpen and nobody expected his stay to last long. That is until he...

Mr. Met gives high-fives, has no time for photos (GIF)

The New York Mets mascot, Mr. Met, appeared to give the cold shoulder to a woman looking to take a photo of him during the first inning of Sunday's game at Citi Field. Mr. Met seemed more than happy to give high-fives to fans he passed along the walkway. However, when the woman tapped him on the shoulder from behind and asked for a picture, he simply shrugged and kept walking...

Mets' Justin Turner could be activated Monday; a Lucas Duda mystery

Justin Turner is likely to return to the Mets for the start of their series against the Braves on Monday, manager Terry Collins said Friday. The #Mets are waiting to activate Turner from the DL so they can keep an extra reliever. That's turning out to be a really good decision. — Chris Iseman (@chris_iseman) July 20, 2013 Because New York had to use its relievers so much...

Mets Minors: The curious case of Jacob deGrom

I give you a pitcher.  He’s a skinny 6’4” righty from Deleon Springs, FL.  He went to Stetson University and as of today he’s 25 years old.  He happened to be a 9th round pick in the 2010 draft and spent 2011 on the shelf with Tommy John surgery. What if I were to tell you now that he’s pitching in AAA… WELL and that he has the stuff you’d usually consider in the...
