Jim Christian has a futuristic vision for the Boston College basketball program inspired by working models from the past. The 49-year-old was introduced as the Eagles 12th head coach by athletic director Brad Bates during a conference call yesterday afternoon. Christian will be formally presented on Tuesday at Conte Forum. He spent the last two seasons at Ohio University, where his Bobcats went 49-22 and made postseason appearances in the NIT and CIT. He previously was head coach at Texas Christian (2008-12) and Kent State (2002-08). The native of Bethpage, N.Y., referenced former BC coaches Tom Davis (who came from Lafayette), Jim O’Brien (St. Bonaventure) and Al Skinner (Rhode Island) as mid-major guys who brought BC to national prominence during extended tenures at The Heights. “The guys that had success there had backgrounds just like me,” said Christian. “That’s what excites (me), and throughout my whole career that’s the kind of situation I wanted, a situation that can grow, become successful and be maintained. “You try to learn as much as you can about the program and the history of it, and what I think the program can become and the opportunity for growth.” Christian will succeed Steve Donahue, who was released after the Eagles were eliminated in the first round of the ACC tournament. BC went 8-24 last season and 54-76 during Donahue’s four years on the bench. Bates said Christian emerged as the lead candidate following a second round of interviews. Christian inherits a team that became less competitive while its conference grew stronger with the addition of Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame. The ACC will get another upgrade when 2013 national champion Louisville joins the fold next season. “There are a lot of different ways that basketball is played in the ACC and there is not one particular style that’s been winning,” said Christian. “Everybody has their own niche. You have to be versatile, and to be good you’ve got to be able to guard. “That’s the one thing my teams have been very consistent at.”
