The Atlanta Braves announced late Sunday night that
outfielder Jason Heyward had undergone an appendectomy. As a result, Atlanta
placed Heyward on the 15-day disabled list yesterday to allow him to recover
from the procedure, according to The Associated Press (via ESPN).
Manager Fredi Gonzalez told reporters that Heyward underwent
the surgery after complaining of stomach pain for a few days. The discomfort
increased, and it grew more localized to his right side.
"A couple of days ago when we were in Pittsburgh, he
felt like he had some stomach fires going," Gonzalez said, "and then
it just kept getting more localized, moving to his right side."
Gonzalez added that there is no time frame for Heyward’s
return. Atlanta called up infielder Tyler Pastornicky to replace Heyward on the
roster, and Reed Johnson and Jordan Schafer figure to see increased time in
