Ray Shero stood pat last year. He doesn't appear to be this season. There is a deal in place for Brendan Morrow.
Via Darren Dreger:
If Morrow waives his NMC, the Pens will apparently deal prospect Joe Morrow.
While that price may seem high, this deal makes unlimited sense.
1. Morrow is a playoff performer. Great read earlier this week from Puck Daddy on Morrow:
Brenden Morrow: Playoff Warrior is an indelible memory from his last trip to the postseason in 2008. He had 15 points in 18 games, carrying the Stars into the conference finals with one of the most stirring individual efforts of the last decade.
2. He brings the veteran leadership the Pens need. He is the captain of the Stars.
3. How scary does Neal-Malkin-Morrow line look?
Morrow is a UFA in the offseason. His cap hit is a reasonable 4.1 million.
BEST OF MAXIM
As if the Pittsburgh Penguins weren't stacked on offense enough as is, they just made their lineup a bit more intimidating by acquiring Brenden Morrow from the Dallas Stars, as first reported by Darren Dreger. According to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun, Morrow waived his no-trade clause to join the Penguins. Pittsburgh will also receive a third-round pick in 2013 along with Morrow...

The Pittsburgh Penguins have made it clear: they want to win another Cup. Now. They dealt parts of their future (top prospect Joe Morrow, a fifth-round pick and two second-round choices) to acquire two players who could be the missing elements they need to bring...
The streaking Pittsburgh Penguins acquired forward Brenden Morrow from the Dallas Stars on Sunday to bolster the team's second line.
Pittsburgh sent defenseman Joe Morrow, the team's first-round pick in the 2011 draft, and a fifth-round choice this year to Dallas in exchange for Morrow and the Stars' third-round pick in the draft.
The 34-year-old Morrow has 243 goals...
It's official via Pierre LeBrun.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded Joe Morrow and a fifth-round pick in 2013 to the Dallas Stars for Brenden Morrow and a third-round pick in 2013.
Brenden Morrow was drafted by the Dallas Stars in 1997 and he's played his entire NHL career with the franchise. He became the captain of the Stars in 2006. He has six goals and five assists...
The rich got richer on Monday, as the Pittsburgh Penguins added some depth to their lineup in the form of Douglas Murray. In conjunction with the team’s deal for Brenden Morrow, the Pens are certainly looking like the team to beat in the Eastern Conference … on paper.
The game is still played on the ice, of course, and that’s where Bruins fans are now hoping to see their team...
DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Stars have sent forward Reilly Smith and newly acquired defenseman Joe Morrow to their AHL affiliate.
The moves Tuesday came two days after the Stars sent longtime captain Brenden Morrow to Pittsburgh for Joe Morrow in a trade that also involved draft picks.
The 21-year-old Smith has six points in 28 games with Dallas this season, including an assist in...
from Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province,
Vancouver GM Mike Gillis better wake up.
If he’s going to get an aging player who was good a couple of years ago he’d better hurry before the Pittsburgh Penguins acquire them all.
Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero had his fans applauding his moves to get Brenden Morrow and Douglas Murray, but NHL executives won’t have quite...
One might think that having one of the best offenses in hockey and acquiring Brenden Morrow from the Stars might be enough for Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Shero to be satisfied with his team’s forwards mix. Apparently, that’s not necessarily the case.
According to ESPN.com, the Penguins are still among the teams interested in Flames forward Jarome Iginla. There...
If ever you were still undecided on whether or not Ray Shero and Dan Bylsma wanted this team to win the Stanley Cup this year or every year, you got it today when the Pens traded Joe Morrow for Brenden Morrow and swapped picks with the Dallas Stars.
Ray Shero must have something on Nieuwendyk because we don't know why he keeps agreeing to these trades. Or maybe they're...
The Stanley Cup isn’t won at the trade deadline, but if it was, the Pittsburgh Penguins would be having their names carved into the trophy right now. It isn’t, of course, but that doesn’t mean the Penguins haven’t done a lot to improve their chances of hoisting the Cup come June.
Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero remains one of the best in the game, and he proved that...
from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
Boston, L.A., and Chicago would be the only suitors for Iginla. He had four teams on his list of places he’d go to waive his no-move clause and Pittsburgh, one of them, just traded for Brenden Morrow, so they’re out. I think it’ll be the Kings, where Darryl Sutter stands behind the bench, but that’s just an educated guess...
Montreal Canadiens (20-6-5) @ Pittsburgh Penguins (25-8-0)
ROOT, TSN-HABS, RDS - 7:00 pm/et
Consol Energy Center - Pittsburgh, PA
The Pittsburgh Penguins' current winning streak and a million "March of the Penguins" references all started with a crazy overtime win against the Montreal Canadiens. Now the Pens sit in first place in the East, while...
For the last several weeks, the conversation -- as subjective as these talks are -- centered around the Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks as to who was the true No. 1 team in the league. Theres a new team (at least for this season) to consider: the Pittsburgh Penguins. A 12-game winning streak, the longest in the NHL this season, isnt too bad of an argument.
1. Penguins 25-8...
After securing only 1 of 4 possible points against the Sabres last week, the Canadiens start a big week with back to back games against the Penguins and the Bruins. The Habs are still clinging to the Northeast lead, but are now 5 points behind the trade happy Pittsburgh Penguins.
Meanwhile, many Canadiens fans are waiting to see Marc Bergevin match Pittsburgh's Ray Shero...
