This is why we watch sports. For the train wrecks, the surreal, and the unimaginable. Bobby Petrino gets in a motorcycle wreck probably crossing train tracks. The wreck is bad, but the cover-up becomes worse. It’s the kind of stuff that would be hard to write for a screenplay. The least likely scenario turns into a can-you-believe-it soap opera with deception at every turn. Petrino’s heartache is a different kind of cheating scandal than what most NCAA head coaches face. Dude ripped up his face and reputation all at once. As bad as what Petrino did and as much of the public’s trust he lost, still he may not end up as the biggest idiot of the week. Ozzie Guillen is giving him a contest. Ozzie Guillen could have said just about anything and it wouldn’t have mattered. But he chose to utter the one thing that South Floridians have complete disdain for: expressing any kind of admiration for Fidel Castro. This was it. The one thing not to say and he said it. Even with an apology, he has created a firestorm that will linger for the rest of the season, which unfortunately for the Miami Marlins is a season of new beginnings with a new ballpark and name. Petrino should be fired. A southern state’s biggest head football coach shouldn’t be allowed to make a mockery of morals and integrity. Ozzie has put his job at risk and can only save it by winning the division. He will more than likely not come back to manage another season in Miami as the pressure will mount to see him go. There are those who don’t appreciate what they have and then there are those that do and live their lives accordingly, even going against the norm to achieve greatness. Bubba Watson won the Masters by using his own style to teach himself how to play and make the most out of his potential. He has no coach and is an eccentric on the course at a time when hardly any exist. Recently, he bought the Dukes of Hazzard car because it fits his personality, and his first inclination after winning in Augusta was to leave quickly to get home to his wife and adopted newborn. Bubba packs genuine emotion and is fresh air in a sports world filled with egomaniacs messing up opportunities and turning others against them. ********** Howard Alperin is Managing Editor of

Bubba Watson photobombs CNBC set

Masters’ champ Bubba Watson went on CNBC Tuesday to chat golf with Darren Rovell. Before the segment, Watson wandered on to the set and photo-bombed the anchors while they had no idea what was going on – or at least did a good job acting. I’m telling you, the sports world needs more Bubba Watsons. This guy just plays golf and enjoys the crap out of himself in a first class...

A muted Ozzie does Marlins no good

You don't have to know Ozzie Guillen well to understand there is nothing inauthentic about him. He is exactly who he purports to be, which has always been part of his appeal, maybe even part of his ability as a baseball manager. He is one of the few truly unfiltered personalities left in sports, and the Miami Marlins understood this last year when they started negotiating with...

Top 10 reasons why the Marlins suspended Ozzie Guillen for admitting that he likes Fidel Castro

10) By doing this one single action, will prevent Ozzie from ever saying anything awkward, ill-informed, misguided or controversial ever again9) Would not want to offend the sensibilities of the ever-dwindling number of Cuban-Americans who actually remember Castro8) Afraid that unless they nip this in the bud, Ozzie will continue to extol the virtues of all of the world's Communist...

White Sox watch former manager Guillen from afar

As Ozzie Guillen tried to explain his way out of another mess he created with his mouth, Chicago's new manager felt compassion for his predecessor. Robin Ventura watched and wished the best for Guillen. ''It's a tough day for him,'' Ventura said Tuesday, hours after Guillen apologized in South Florida for comments lauding Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, remarks...

Bubba Watson wins The Masters, Golf Boys get their Green Jacket

Ozzie Guillen suspended 5 games by Marlins for Castro comments

Ozzie Guillen has never been one to hold his tongue. Some would say the outspoken former big leaguer is the Charles Barkley of Major League baseball. Guillen recently made some questionable comments about his admiration for Fidel Castro, saying that he “loves” and respects the Cuban dictator. For his comments, the Miami Marlins have suspended [...]

New name, new home, new leader: Interesting 2012 ahead in Miami

The Miami Marlins have a new ballpark, a new manager, a new name and a number of high-profile free agent signees joining a solid nucleus of young players who are developing into solid players. Adding Ozzie Guillen as the field general alone would make Miami a team to watch, but all these other factors make the Marlins one of the most difficult teams to project heading into the season...

Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen on the hottest of hot seats in MLB

Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen is on the hottest of hot seats in major league baseball currently and the regular season isn’t even a week old. After opening a new $515 million dollar stadium, spending millions of dollars that the franchise might or might not have on free agents in the offseason, Ozzie Guillen might have opened his mouth and undone all the goodwill...

Ozzie Guillen and Bobby Petrino show us the coaches in charge aren’t the sharpest

Sometimes it’s great to live in a country where Presidents forget the definition of is, Jimmer becomes a popular baby name, and the closest our children come to learning mathematics begins and ends with Octomom. But, sometimes the best part about tithing (and then some) to Uncle Sam with the prospect of getting peanut shells in return is the ability to somehow link an Arkansas...

Overnight Masters ratings down 22%

Despite a thrilling finish that saw Bubba Watson storm to the lead on the back nine and eventually defeat Louis Oosthuizen on the second playoff hole, overnight ratings for The Masters on CBS were down 22% from last year, finishing with an 8.1 rating. That is the lowest rating since the 2004 tournament, which drew a 7.3. One similarity between the 2012 and 2004 tournaments is that...

Peter Hanson’s errant drive hits fan at The Masters

Sunday at Augusta was as memorable as they get for more of the players.  American Bubba Watson left wearing a green jacket after some wizardry on the second playoff hole.  Runner-up Louis Oosthuizen carded the fourth ever (first ever televised) albatross.  And this poor schmuck took an errant Peter Hanson drive to the chest on the Par 5 8th Sunday afternoon. Judging by the reactions...
