The Pirates’ decision to non-tender Jeff Karstens was the big news of the day, but they still had seven other players to deal with in advance of Friday’s midnight deadline. Chris Resop was traded to Oakland for Zach Stewart, a reliever in high-A ball. Basically, he was non-tendered and the Bucs got a tiny return instead of nothing. I thought there was a chance Resop would be tendered, but he would’ve been somewhat expensive for a fairly mediocre reliever so I have no problem with sending him out.  The Bucs also traded Yamaico Navarro (who was recently DFA) to Baltimore for 19-year old minor league pitcher Jhondaniel Medina, who spent most of the 2012 season in rookie ball. The other player in danger of a non-tender was Charlie Morton, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery and won’t be available until around June.  Speculation seemed to be that the Pirates wouldn’t tender Morton (since that would lead to an undeserved raise) but that they’d agree to some other kind of deal to keep him around. They did just that, signing him for $2 million and avoiding arbitration for this year. While $2M is less than he would’ve made in arb and less than he made last year ($2.445M), I’m very surprised they went that high. This is the same team that refused to pay Karstens around $4M, and they are giving Morton–who will only pitch half a season at best–half of that. I was thinking more along the lines of something cheaper or even a minor league deal. This makes the Karstens move even more bizarre, but I am glad that Charlie will be sticking around. The other players up for arbitration–Neil Walker, Joel Hanrahan, Garrett Jones, Gaby Sanchez, and James McDonald–were all tendered contracts as expected. They will have their salaries determined through the arbitration process.
