Recently there has been some talk about the Pirates trading away Kevin Correia. Rob Biertempfel from the Tribune-Review reported last night that the Angels could be interested in Correia and willing to part with a "high end prospect" to get him. I'm not sure I believe the second part of that, but regardless there is some level of interest in Correia right now.
In my opinion, it would be extremely foolish for the Pirates not to trade Correia as soon as possible. He's been pitching well recently, or at least putting up good numbers recently. He has a 3.81 ERA in his last five starts, and the Pirates have won four of those games. He's coming off a season high in strikeouts with six last night against the Brewers. No team is going to be fooled that Correia can really help them down the stretch, but he certainly could upgrade the back end of someone's rotation.
The Pirates can afford to lose him with Rudy Owens, Jeff Locke, and Justin Wilson pitching well in AAA. Correia is also a guy that can really kill his trade value in a small amount of time. He's been known to get hit around quite a bit, so the Pirates would be best served trading him now, while he's "hot". If they can get any kind of decent prospect or even package him in a deal that brings back some major league help, they'd have to seriously consider pulling the trigger in a hurry. Correia won't be with the Pirates next year, so they should get something for him before they lose him for nothing when they don't resign him after this year.
Again, I have trouble believing that Correia has much trade value, but crazier things have happened.
