The "Mc" Effect:
Recently there has been some talk about the Pirates trading away Kevin Correia
. Rob Biertempfel from the Tribune-Review reported last night that the Angels could be interested in Correia and willing to part with a "high end prospect" to get him. I'm not sure I believe the second part of that, but regardless there is some level of interest in Correia right now.
In my opinion, it would be extremely foolish for the Pirates not to trade Correia as soon as possible. He's been pitching well recently, or at least putting up good numbers recently. He has a 3.81 ERA in his last five starts, and the Pirates have won four of those games. He's coming off a season high in strikeouts with six last night against the Brewers. No team is going to be fooled that Correia can really help them down the stretch, but he certainly could upgrade the back end of someone's rotation.
The Pirates can afford to lose him with Rudy Owens
, Jeff Locke
, and Justin Wilson
pitching well in AAA. Correia is also a guy that can really kill his trade value in a small amount of time. He's been known to get hit around quite a bit, so the Pirates would be best served trading him now, while he's "hot". If they can get any kind of decent prospect or even package him in a deal that brings back some major league help, they'd have to seriously consider pulling the trigger in a hurry. Correia won't be with the Pirates next year, so they should get something for him before they lose him for nothing when they don't resign him after this year.
Again, I have trouble believing that Correia has much trade value, but crazier things have happened.

Drew Sutton – Image Credit: Pittsburgh Pirates
Since joining Pittsburgh, Drew Sutton has added a spark at the top of the Pirates lineup. The 28-year-old has had some memorable moments so far, too. Between hitting a walkoff home run — his first long ball since August of 2010 and a moment that he said is the reason you play the game — learning to flash the Zoltan “Z” on the...
Just like the months in the summer heat up, so does Neil Walker at the plate. After hitting .278 in April and .238 in the month of May, Walker’s bat has started to become red hot in July.
“I feel good at the plate,” Walker said. “And I’m happy about that. July is usually a good month for me. When the weather gets hot, I start to feel a lot better.”
And the second baseman...
It was hard to make the argument a few weeks ago that Starling Marte needed more time. Marte was in the middle of a pretty amazing hot streak. On June 22nd, Marte had a .754 OPS on the year. Over his next nine games he would put up a .450 average and a 1.376 OPS in 40 at-bats.
All throughout the hot streak, people were calling for him to be promoted. On June 27th, after Marte went...
For the second straight season, the Pittsburgh Pirates have come out of the gates from the All-Star break and found themselves in a tie for first place in the NL Central. For the second straight season, almost nobody believes they are "for real."
In fact, I suspect you'd find more people who think that Santa and the Easter Bunny are "for real"...
Over the last week or so and especially this weekend, rumors regarding the Pirates and Arizona’s Justin Upton have been heating up. The Pirates reportedly had a scout in Chicago this week to watch Upton, and ESPN’s Jayson Stark called the Pirates a “serious contender” for the young outfielder. Jon Heyman of CBS, however, reported that there “is nothing serious” between...

Final: Brewers 10, Pirates 7
WP: Francisco Rodriguez (2-4, 3.86 ERA)
LP: Tony Watson (4-1, 5.00 ERA)
This was just one of those really strange games. First off, it took forever (3 hours, 50 mins). Second, a lot of really good things happened for the Pirates. And third, a lot of really bad things happened for the Pirates. Unfortunately, the bad things out-weighed the good things....
The Pirates looked foolish both at the plate and in the field today, as they fell to the Brewers and dropped their first series in a month.
Yovani Gallardo absolutely dominated, cooling down the Bucco bats for the first time in a quite a while. He did it by striking out a startling 14 batters in seven innings (the bullpen added three more K’s). It was ugly; the Pirates tied a...
Whether it was a financial issue, a slight against the Pirates, or the draw of graduating from an elite university with a degree, Mark Appel has decided to go back to Standford and not sign with the Pirates. With this decision, it now makes sense as to why the first seven teams in the draft passed on Appel. Despite receiving a first overall projection, Appel's stock fell dramatically...
The Pittsburgh Pirates' Andrew McCutchen has been the hottest hitter in baseball over the last month-plus.
The All-Star outfielder seems unlikely to cool down with a visit to hitter-friendly Coors Field up next.
McCutchen looks to continue his torrid pace as the Pirates and Colorado Rockies open a three-game set Monday night.
Batting an MLB-best .458 with 11 homers, 31 RBIs...
Mark Appel, a big right-handed pitcher out of Stanford and the Pittsburgh Pirates 1st round selection in 2012 failed to come to an agreement on a signing bonus making him the only player selected in...
