Yesterday was a tough time to be a Pirates fan after the St. Louis Cardinals eliminated Pittsburgh in Game 5 of the NLDS. WTAE reporter Guy Junker was reporting on Wednesday night’s events when a red-headed Cardinals fan attempted to land on kiss on Junker’s cheek.  Well done by Junker to play it off cool and get through the segment pretty much unscathed.

MLB Game Picks - Wednesday: October 9, 2013

After yesterday's games, the Red Sox are in and the Tigers get to fight another day. The Tigers forced a Game 5 with a thrilling (and disputed) win over the Athletics. Yesterday, I speculated on whether Max Scherzer would start instead of Doug Fister. He did not. But Fister was decent and Scherzer did pitch after all and got the win in relief. After all, he got the run support...

AFL Recap: Tough Day at Plate For Hanson, Benedict Strong in Relief

After playing two night games to open the season against Salt River, the Scottsdale Scorpions moved on to Peoria for a day game Thursday. Scottsdale dropped their second straight game, losing 6-3 today.  Alen Hanson was the only Pittsburgh Pirates player in the starting lineup. He batted lead-off and played shortstop. Hanson struck out in his first AB, then reached on an error in...

End of Season Post-Mortem: 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates

Here we are, folks: the End of Season Post-Mortem series. If you're new here (which about 50% of our reader base is in comparison to last year), here's a brief explanation: after a team is eliminated from playoff contention, we're going to put their season under a microscope and look at just what the hell went wrong, what went right, and so on and so forth. The goal is...

Cardinals David Freese’s Homerun Off Pirates Gerrit Cole

The St. Louis Cardinals downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 Wednesday night. The biggest play of the game was third baseman David Freese hitting a two-run homer off of Pirates starter Gerrit Cole in the second inning to give St. Louis a 2-0 lead. The Cardinals win probability shot up to 74 percent after Freese’s blow. Anybody can tell you that Freese hit a big homerun. I...

Contract Crowdsourcing 2013-14: A.J. Burnett

Free agency begins five days after the end of the World Series. As in other recent offseasons, FanGraphs is once again facilitating this offseason a contract-crowdsourcing project, the idea being to harness the wisdom of the crowds to the end of better understanding the 2013-14 free-agent market. Note that, this year, in addition to asking readers to estimate the years/dollars each...

Pirates' bats silent again in Game 5 loss to Cards

Gerrit Cole was hardly the problem. It wasn't as if the St. Louis Cardinals really figured out the rookie. The Pittsburgh Pirates' breakthrough season ended in Game 5 of the NL division series because for the second straight game, they couldn't muster much offense. Adam Wainwright went all the way on the mound and the Cardinals got two-run homers from David Freese and...

CardinalsFarm Minor League Pitcher of the Year

On Wednesday, we brought you our Minor League Player of the Year for 2013, Kolten Wong. Today, we will give you our Pitcher of the Year. Baby Bird pitchers made, and our still making, a huge impact for the big club. Michael Wacha has forgotten how to allow hits as he has only allowed 2 over the last 16 innings, including a playoff start. Trevor Rosenthal, Carlos Martinez, and Kevin...

Starting Lineups: In Appreciation Of The St. Louis Cardinals Franchise

Count me among the masses who wanted to see the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals. Without a rooting interest, the feel-good story of the baseball season tugged on some heartstrings throughout the summer and into early autumn. Still, it’s hard not to appreciate any Cardinals team let alone this Cardinals team that has […]The post Starting Lineups: In Appreciation...

NLCS preview: Breaking down the Cardinals vs. Dodgers

ST. LOUIS -- The Los Angeles Dodgers are on the way to becoming the best team money can buy. The Cardinals have built a model franchise through the draft as well as the free-agent market. But as different as their roads have been, they have reached the same destination: the National League Championship Series. And they arrive about as evenly matched on paper as two teams can be...

Dodgers will face the Cardinals in the NLCS

Adam Wainwright and the St. Louis Cardinals completed the puzzle tonight and took care of business beating the Pirates. This means Game 1 will be Friday in St. Louis... the schedule looks like this: Game 1 Friday at St. Louis - Gerinke vs. Kelly? Game 2 Saturday at St. Louis - Kershaw vs. Wacha? Game 3 Monday at Dodger Stadium - Ryu vs. Wainwright? Game...

First Pitch: Pirates Need to Stay The Course

The Rays will trade David Price this off-season, and the Pirates should have nothing to do with him. David Price will be a big name on the trade market this off-season. He’s one of the best pitchers in the game, and has two years remaining. If you want the comfort of two years of an established major league pitcher, you can’t do much worse than him. The Pirates certainly could...

NLDS Game 5 Preview: Gerrit Cole vs. Adam Wainwright with an NLCS berth on the line

One of the coolest aspects of a Game 5 is that pretty much the entire baseball-watching world has turned its eyes onto the Pirates and Cardinals. As such, there are a couple of links that I think are good reading to open this preview with.  First up is Getting Blanked's preview of the Andrew McCutchen/Adam Wainwright matchup. Drew is right in saying that in general, hitter...

Dodgers-Cardinals Preview

Carpets were still drying out from a champagne bath and a few players looked bleary eyed after a workout at Busch Stadium. A day after advancing, there wasn't much time to rest for the St. Louis Cardinals. ''Obviously, it was a great celebration and a lot of fun,'' reliever John Axford said Thursday. ''The clubhouse guys, I don't know if they even...

Dodgers vs. Cardinals, 2013 NLCS breakdown: No narrative, just baseball

The Dodgers are set to play the Cardinals in the 2013 NLCS, which is interesting because it’s not interesting. In other words, the media hasn’t really figured out a narrative here. Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports gave it a go, but it was sort of a half-hearted rich/poor thing. So maybe, just MAYBE, the baseball can speak for itself? Here’s hoping, but I doubt it. Something about...

2013 Memphis Redbirds Starter of the Year

In a very talented field, lefty Tyler Lyons made the greatest contribution over the longest period as a starting pitcher at Triple-A this season.
