ST. LOUIS - Cardinals closer Jason Motte will be shutdown the rest of this season and possibly into the next as he gets set to undergo Tommy John surgery next week. The right-handed fireballer tied for the National League lead in saves last season and signed a two-year extension with the club in the offseason. Cardinals GM John Mozeliak told reporters prior to Friday night's game against the Brewers that he was told by the team doctors that Motte had trouble during his scheduled throwing session earlier in the day. Motte was trying to avoid surgery but the elbow had other ideas. "Obviously we were hopeful and thought maybe he could rehab through this," Mozeliak told reporters in Milwaukee. "But after throwing today, he just realized it wasn't going to get any better." If Motte needs support for the journey back to recovery, he should look no further than teammate Adam Wainwright, who is the most recent Cardinals pitcher to go through the Tommy John process. Wainwright missed all of the 2011 season and was back on the mound roughly 13 months after having surgery. Mozeliak said surgery is scheduled for sometime next week. Thanks everyone 3littlebirds. God has a plan. It all happens for a reason. Guess I just get to hang out with my girls more! blessed Jason Motte (@JMotte30) May 3, 2013
