The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly close to acquiring quarterback Carson Palmer from the Oakland Raiders. Rumors of the move have been swirling for several days, but after the Raiders shipped a few draft picks to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for Matt Flynn, Palmer’s exit was all the more assured. Reports suggest the Cardinals will only surrender a late-round draft pick, while the two teams will also swap picks in another late round. As part of the deal, Palmer will agree to reduce his salary for the 2013 season from $13 million to $8 million, plus incentives. The Cardinals also waived quarterback John Skelton on Monday, further cementing the fact that Palmer is definitely headed to Arizona. The move comes after Palmer refused to take a paycut to stay with the Raiders. As the starting signal-caller for Oakland in 2012, Palmer completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 4,018 yards, with 22 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. His passer rating of 85.3, which ranked 16th out of the 32 NFL quarterbacks who qualified. When you consider how awful the guys Arizona had under center were last season, Palmer is a huge upgrade, even at 33 years old. The only issue for the Cardinals will be protecting the slow-footed USC product. Arizona surrendered an NFL-worst 58 sacks in 2012. But if Palmer can somehow survive the onslaught of rushers that are certainly headed his way, he’ll have a great receiving corps at his disposal, and one that is a big upgrade over what he had in Oakland.
