The Chicago Cubs played the third and final game of their series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. The two teams split the first two games, which made Sunday’s contest the rubber match. Baker was signed by the Cubs this offseason, but has been recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Baker only pitched five innings, but what he showed was the ability to get batters out. It may not have been done in the most dazzling fashion, but he got the job done. In Baker’s five innings of work he walked just one batter and gave up only two hits without allowing any runs to score. Although Baker was able to prevent the Brewers from scoring, his teammates weren’t able to do enough to win the game. The Cubs did score the first run of the game on a solo home run by Junior Lake in the fifth inning, but it ended up being their only run of the game. The Brewers scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, and the Cubs didn’t get a single base runner after Lake’s home run. With that, the Cubs lost the rubber match by a score of 3-1. At this point in the season for these two teams, it is a race to see who isn’t going to finish last in the division. Sunday’s loss put Milwaukee two games over the Cubs, who are currently at the bottom of the pile. The two teams still have one more four game series, so they still have time to try to push for that fourth place spot. As for the Cubs, 17 of their remaining 20 games are against NL Central opponents, so they will have the opportunity to play a ‘spoiler’ role in the upcoming weeks.
