JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 4-23-13

Iowa Cubs 1 @ Memphis Redbirds 4 This will be short since the I-Cubs barely hit the ball last night. Nick Struck went 6 innings, allowed 5 hits and 2 runs. He walked 2 and struckout none. Casey Coleman struckout the side in the 7th. Yoanner Negrin gave up 3 hits and 2 runs in an inning of work. Logan Watkins was 1-2 with 2 more walks. Brad Nelson was 1-3 with a walk. Ryan Sweeney...

Prospect Profile: Ronald Torreyes

This is a continuation of the weekly series of of writing about a Cubs prospect profile. Early on, I will be writing about guys that Dave and I did not cover in our Prospect Ratings. Links for past ratings and past profiles at at the end. Additional links can be found at the end of the article. Who is Ronald Torreyes? Torreyes was signed out of Libertado de Berinas, Venezuela, by...

Cubs & D'backs Split Two at Talking Stick

Josh Conway, Erick Leal, and Carlos Martinez combined to throw a three-hitter, retiring the last ten men a row, and David Bote drilled an RBI single to tie the game and Jacob Rogers followed one out later with a sacrifice fly to give the Cubs the lead, as one squad of Cubs rallied for two runs in the 5th and held on to edge one squad of Diamondbacks 2-1 on Whirlwind Field, and...

Rank Relief: Someone from the Cubs who is not Carlos Marmol

Michael Bowden watches Jay Bruce’s game tying double roll to the wall The Cubs were at it again tonight but this time Carlos Marmol somehow stayed out of the spotlight.  The Cubs are not a great team but they have Theo Epstein so they will probably win a World Series soon despite severed goat’s heads.  Tonight it almost seemd liek they would steal one from the Reds.  In the...

The Marmol and Gregg Show

In tonight’s game, Carlos Villanueva was tasked to go the distance because of the taxed bullpen from last night’s marathon, but was pulled in favor of Carlos Marmol once a bunt moved Shin-Soo Choo to second base and Joey Votto was up.  The ensuing plate appearance produced a seeing-eye ground ball.  If you look at the video, while the grounder was hit very sharply, it was within...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 4-22-13

Iowa Cubs 5 @ Memphis Redbirds 2 Brooks Raley gave up 5 hits and 2 runs in 5.1 innings. He walked 2 and struckout 3. Zach Putnam, Rafael Dolis and Blake Parker finished the game without allowing any runs. He did give up 3 hits and walked 3 while striking out 5. 1B Brad Nelson was 2-4 with a home run and a strikeout. I expected to be writing his name in these recaps frequently, but...

Minor League Report: April 16-22

Iowa Cubs - Brett Jackson is doing pretty much what you would expect Brett Jackson to do: striking out more than once per game, getting on base at a fine .354 clip, and stealing three bases this season.  The thing to watch for with Jackson is not the strikeout rate – it will always be a problem for him – but the slugging percentage that current sits at just .381.  A moderate...

Et tu, Keith Law?

I went over to Keith Law's blog to see if he had any draft info and I couldn't look past the first article. Candidates for demotion and promtion So I figure Keith Law is going to rip to shreds the idea that Anthony Rizzo and/or Starlin Castro would be sent to the minor leagues based on their performance so far. Nope. Rizzo's stat line this season is heavy on secondary...

Jim Deshaies is Trying Not to Scare Anyone

Carson Cistulli has posted a short interview with new Cubs color commentator Jim Deshaies over at Fangraphs. In it, he talks about his transition to Chicago after 16 years in Houston and having to adapt to an audience that is unfamiliar with his style. He also talks about his philosophy in presenting analytics to a wide array of fans. …I think the way the game has changed because...

Cubs 4, Reds 2(10)

Carlos Marmol blew a lead in the ninth before Darwin Barney bailed him out with a homer in the 10th inning on Tuesday night, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Chicago ended its four-game losing streak after blowing a late lead for the second straight day. The Cubs let a two-run lead get away in the 13th inning of a 5-4 loss Monday night. Barney...

Dale Sveum: motivator extraordinaire?

This season hasn't gotten off to the start that the Chicago Cubs would have liked. And if you've paid even the slightest bit of attention to this organization over the course of the past couple of years, it should come as no surprise at all that they currently sit at 5-12, at the bottom of the National League Central. Despite those extremely low expectations coming in...

Reds rally in 9th, but fall 4-2 in 10 innings

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Carlos Marmol blew a lead in the ninth before Darwin Barney bailed him out with a homer in the 10th inning on Tuesday night, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Chicago ended its four-game losing streak after blowing a late lead for the second straight day. The Cubs let a two-run lead get away in the 13th inning of a 5-4 loss Monday...

Series Preview: Chicago Cubs (5-12) at Cincinnati Reds (11-8)

The Reds are still the team to beat in the NL Central. They had a rough first road trip, losing two of three in St. Louis and getting swept in Pittsburgh, but bounced back with a sweep of the Phillies and winning three of four against the Marlins. The Cubs, meanwhile, already seem to be falling apart in April. It only seems like a matter of time before Sveum gets gif-ed up in a straitjacket...

Bonus Venting

The Cubs lost in epic fashion tonight.  It was spectacular and glorious.  In some ways it was predictable, but they were facing a very good Reds offense and did not have their best defense in place.  This is as good a time as any to vent, even though it’s still April. Things we know to be true… The Reds are good. The Cubs are bad. Dave Sappelt probably shouldn’t be allowed...

Unearned Losses (and Other Pitching Stats We Need to Use)

(Photo: TOM LYNN/AP) Last weekend, the Brewers won two games thanks to several timely errors by the Cubs.  In games started by Edwin Jackson and Scott Feldman, the Brewers took the lead on unearned runs both times.  It seems like a shame for Jackson and Feldman to get tagged with losses in those cases (as much as the Cubs losing can be a “shame” anyway). It got me thinking...
