The Chicago Cubs dumped one trade chip on Monday when they shipped starting pitcher Matt Garza to the Texas Rangers, and appear to have sent away another early Tuesday morning. According to the New York Post, the New York Yankees are set to acquire outfielder Alfonso Soriano from the Cubs in exchange for a mid-level prospect. The Yankees are desperately in need of a right-handed bat and the 37-year-old Soriano might be worth the gamble. He will likely take over as the every day left fielder until Curtis Granderson returns from the disabled list, after that Soriano is likely ticketed for the designated hitter role. Soriano broke into the big leagues with the Yankees and made his Major League debut with the team back in 1999. He played the next five seasons in the Bronx, before being shipped to the Texas Rangers as part of the trade that brought Alex Rodriguez to the Yankees. The Cubs signed Soriano to a massive eight-year, $136 million contract back in November of 2006, and since then he has hit .264 and averaged roughly 26 home runs and 75 RBIs per season. He was named an All-Star two times in his years with the Cubs, and has been selected seven times overall. Those numbers certainly don’t match up to the contract he received from the team, and the Cubs have been looking to unload him for the better part of the past two years. So far this season Soriano is hitting .259 with 17 home runs and 51 RBIs. He has posted a woeful on-base percentage of .289, an his OPS is .756. New York badly needs a right-handed bat, and while Soriano is owed about $25 million through the end of next year, if there is any team that can absorb that kind of a salary hit it’s the Yankees.
