Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Gavin Floyd will reportedly miss the remainder of the 2013 season and possibly next year because he’s set to undergo surgery on his right elbow. On Monday the White Sox announced that Floyd would be out for 14 to 19 months, which would put his 2014 season in jeopardy. The right-hander will have surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament and a torn flexor muscle on Tuesday in New York. He’s still just 30 years old, so a bounce-back shouldn’t be too difficult, though it will take time. Floyd was 0-4 with a 5.18 ERA in five starts for the White Sox this season and has been on the disabled list since April 28. He was originally thought to have just strained his flexor tendon. The typically reliable Floyd was in his 10th season in the big leagues, seven of those with the White Sox after being traded to Chicago from the Philadelphia Phillies in December of 2006. He played parts of three seasons with the Phillies. Floyd has a career record of 70-70, with a 4.48 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. His best season came in 2008 when he made 33 starts, pitched 206.1 innings and racked up a 17-8 record with a 3.84 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. In March of 2009 he inked a four-year, $15.5 million deal, but hasn’t reached the same heights since. Tommy John surgery and the recovery from it is a huge and taxing process for a pitcher. When you consider that Floyd is playing the 2013 season on a $9.5 million club option and will be a free agent in November, his future us far from certain.
