Besides Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, nobody was more pleased to see Rashad Evans lose on Saturday night at UFC 156 than Chris Weidman (Pictured). UFC president Dana White hinted earlier this week that a victorious Evans could be middleweight king Anderson Silva’s next opponent. However, a lackluster performance which lead to a disappointing loss has erased Evans from that chatter. So, that has to leave Weidman for next dibs at Silva’s crown, right Dana? “I would have to say yes,” White stated at Saturday’s post-fight press conference. “Going into this fight anyway we wanted to wait, we wanted to see what happens, and I liked Weidman for this [Silva] fight anyway, so yeah.” Well, if you wanted “The All-American” all along, what was the point in waiting? Were you hoping Evans would have performed more like “Suga” than sluggish because that’s the more marketable fight? Regardless, Evans’ ship has sailed. “Rashad looked worse than I’ve ever seen him [Saturday]. He looked terrible,” White expressed. Anyway, it appears Weidman will finally get his shot at “The Spider.” And the Brazilian is down, despite what his camp has claimed in the past. “It’s always a process in dealing with Anderson and getting him his next fight,” White expressed. “I don’t mean that in a negative way, it’s just I’m used to it. I know how this all goes. Everybody thinks he’s ducking [Weidman], I don’t know why he does this, he makes it look like he doesn’t want to fight Weidman. “Believe me right here, right now when I tell you, Anderson Silva does not care who he fights. Whoever we end up coming up with him to fight, he will fight. There’s never been a situation where I’ve been with Anderson Silva where he’s said, ‘I will absolutely not fight this guy.’ So, my long winded answer is, yes [Weidman is next].” Weidman owns a perfect 9-0 professional résumé and most believed he solidified top contender status when he steamrolled Mark Munoz in July. He is recovering from a November shoulder surgery that will have him sidelined until March. Silva intends to marinate until the spring, so the timing is just right for their a showdown. “We’ve got to make sure Weidman is alright. The later the better for Weidman though,” White said in closing. “We’re thinking about the summer. It looks like Weidman. As long as Weidman’s healthy that’s probably the fight we’ll make.”
