X-rays on Browns running back Montario Hardesty's right thumb were negative meaning it's not broken a league source said today. But the Browns are still awaiting more information today to determine the nature and extent of the injury. Hardesty will most likely sit out Thursday night's second preseason game against the Lions but the hope is that he'll be back in time for the third preseason tuneup Aug. 24th in Indianapolis. The third contest will be treated like a dress rehearsal for the regular season with starters playing into the third quarter. Hardesty who had just returned to team drills on Monday has missed all or parts of 10 of the 15 training camp practices with a hamstring tendon injury and the thumb. The Browns view him as a talented runner and would like to have him on the roster but he needs to get on the field to prove he deserves a roster spot. The Browns actually have a surplus of good running backs this season with a group that includes Dion Lewis Brandon Jackon and Chris Ogbonnaya behind starter Trent Richardson. Hardesty headed into camp as the No. 2 back but has since fallen behind Lewis for that role because of the injuries. He suffered the thumb injury Monday when a direct snap sailed over his head and he leaped to grab it. The ball smacked his thumb and he came down in pain.
