College Football Preview: Boise State vs. Fresno State

So, Fresno State, are you hoping that you can catch the Broncos looking ahead to next week’s visit to Nevada?

Yeah, about that…hope can only get you so far when your defense is going to be worn out before you head to the locker room at halftime.

At one point, this had the potential to be the WAC’s best rivalry, but alas, with the exception of Fresno’s 27-7 win in 2005, it’s been all Boise over the last decade. Will that continue when both teams are in the Mountain West? I’m no fortune teller, so I’ll leave that to someone else, but as for tonight, it’s not going to be pretty.

Fresno’s a solid team, but that doesn’t mean much when we’re considering a lopsided ‘rivalry’ and Boise’s penchant for putting any markedly inferior opponent away by halftime. And with Nevada on the horizon, that’s no doubt what they’d like to do tonight.

Fresno hasn’t fared well against the best offenses they’ve faced this season, as they allowed 55 points and 578 yards at Ole Miss, 49 points and 472 yards against Hawaii, and 35 points and 416 yards against Nevada last week.

Boise is averaging more than 47 points and 530 yards per game this season. Good luck?

Fresno State can score – their low this season was 27, against Hawaii, and they’ve scored more than 30 points in four straight games and seven of nine games this season – but if that same Hawaii offense that scored 49 against Fresno managed only a single touchdown against Boise, that doesn’t speak too well for the Bulldogs’ chances to move the ball enough to stay within reach.

But even if Fresno is able to be somewhat productive offensively, it won’t be nearly enough. Perhaps this one could turn out to be a lot more interesting than I expect, but I look for the Broncos to try to wrap this one up as early as possible, with their biggest hurdle left looming next week.
