Louisville closer Nick Burdi has a chance to be an immediate-impact player for the team that drafts him. Given the Tigers’ lingering uncertainty in the bullpen, it’s no surprise to see many experts linking Burdi to Detroit. SBNation recently released a “Consensus 2014 MLB Mock Draft“, pulling results from six different mocks around the web into one board. Two of those six mock drafts chose Burdi for the Tigers, while the other four mentioned the obvious connection. From MinorLeagueBall.com: Burdi seems like a Tigers pick due to the fact that they rush their prospects and the fact they took two college reliever types last year. Burdi could help them as soon as this September if they wanted to solidify their bullpen for their playoff run. Sounds good. How about MLBDraftInsider.com? The only way they don’t take Burdi is if someone like [Touki] Toussaint or [Sean] Reid-Foley is still on the board, and even still I think they’d prefer to go the collegiate route. [Brandon] Finnegan is a possibility here, as well. Finnegan was the Tigers’ pick in Keith Law’s latest effort at ESPN. He had Burdi coming off the board No. 15 over to the Angels. Scout.com went with 1B Connor Gillaspie from Wichita State, which obviously does not do as quick a job addressing a position of need. The Scout mock drafter, Kiley McDaniel, called the 23rd pick “likely high for Burdi even for a team in love with hard throwers.” MLB.com’s Jim Callis dipped back into the college ranks for Virginia pitcher Nick Howard: Detroit covets hard throwers and Louisville right-hander Nick Burdi has the best college fastball. Howard is close behind him and, unlike Burdi, has a legitimate chance to transition from college closer to big-league starter. And finally, Baseball America’s John Manuel called for Detroit to pick pitcher Erik Fedde.
