After losing to Duke in the NCAA Sweet 16, it was nothing but the norm in East Lansing as more than a dozen couches were set on fire. This so called “tradition” was started in the spring of 1999, when residents in East Lansing rioted following a Michigan State loss in the Final Four. Since then, similar instances have occurred, but on a smaller scale. In most cases, the fires break out at Cedar Village, the infamous apartment complex on Michigan State’s campus. The most recent string of burning couches happened after the devastating loss to Indiana, when the couches were once again burning on the streets of Cedar Village.
