It was once believed that Julian Edelman could be the future replacement for Wes Welker.
That ship has come and gone.
With Welker parting ways with New England and joining Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos along with the Patriots signing Danny Amendola—it’s somewhat clear that Edelman isn’t as highly regarded in New England’s organization as he once was.
Edelman will enter training camp competing with wide receivers Donald Jones, Michael Jenkins and Lavelle Hawkins along with rookies Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce.
It isn’t a guarantee that Edelman will make the final cut.
Edelman did test the free agent market this offseason as the New York Giants showed interest in the 27-year-old, but ultimately New England’s former seventh round pick agreed to terms to a one-year, $765,000 contract with the Patriots.
Edelman is now entering his fifth season in the NFL but has yet to play a full 16-game season.
