To make room for Neal on the 40-man roster the Cubs transferred pitcher Rafael Dolis to the 60-day disabled list. He’s been out since June 1 with a right forearm strain.

Mike Olt was 2-5 with a double and triple; he struck out twice.
Jake Arrieta was nasty, as I said earlier. He struck out 11 in 5 scoreless innings, scattering 2 hits and 3 walks. Alberto Cabrera allowed a pair of runs in the 2 innings he pitched. Chang-Yong Lim, coming to a bullpen near you, pitched a scoreless frame. Brian Schlitter allowed a pair...
With the trade deadline behind us, there are only a few major items left on the regular season checklist. Those include waiver trades, and the expansion of big league rosters in September. With the injury to Luis Valbuena and Julio Borbon being designated for assignment, the Cubs are getting a sneak preview of some guys who will likely be called up for the last month of the season...
In continuing our overview of the Chicago Cubs’ minor league system, last week we profiled several players on the rosters of the Iowa Cubs, Tennessee Smokies and Daytona Cubs. Today, we evaluate a handful of prospects playing for the Cubs’ lower tier minor league teams of Kane County, Boise and Arizona.

Hey! Mike Olt hit a home run and walked 3 times! Clearly, his struggles are over. Darnell McDonald went 2-6 with a jack, as did Dave Sappelt. Player of the day (for this team), though, was Edgar Gonzalez. He was 5-6 with 3 home runs!
Yoanner Negrin had a nice semi-start, going 4 innings where he allowed 5 hits, a walk, and an earned run (2 runs total...

8 runs were scored in the first 2 innings. Mike Olt went 0-4 with no walks or strikeouts.
Justin Grimm was pretty poor early on, allowing 5 runs in the first 2 innings. Afterwards, he settled down and didn't allow another run. He ended with a 6 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 8 SO line, which is acceptable given how he got there. Casey Coleman took...
The Chicago Cubs have placed third baseman Luis Valbuena on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained right oblique muscle, according to Manny Randhawa of MLB.com. To replace Valbuena on the roster, the Cubs promoted infielder Logan Watkins from Triple-A.
Manager Dale Sveum told reporters that Valbuena began experiencing discomfort in his side last week. The pain arose again...
Here are a few more features of players from the lower level of the Chicago Cubs’ minor league system.
Dillon Maples: RH pitcher Maples’ performance for Boise the last couple of weeks is further evidence that as much as we try to figure out the game of baseball, the more confounding it proves to be. Former major league pitcher Steve Blass won 69 games for the Pittsburgh...
Chase Utley has had a busy day.
After reportedly agreeing to a two-year, $27 million contract extension with the Phillies Wednesday night, the second baseman crashed into Chicago Cubs catcher Dioner Navarro during the seventh inning in a nasty collision at the plate.
Navarro managed to hang on to the ball and Utley was thrown out on the play, but the Cubs catcher was tended to by...
Donnie Murphy hit a tiebreaking three-run shot in the ninth inning for his second homer of the game, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night.
Murphy drove a 3-1 pitch from Justin De Fratus deep into the left field seats for his third homer in two games. He also had a solo shot in the third.
Luis Garcia (0-1) set up Murphy's winning...

The big news of the night was the Chase Utley extension. He didn’t start the game, but nearly finished it in the seventh when he, as the go-ahead run–was thrown out at home after a collision with Dioner Navarro. The Phillies never got that go-ahead run in, and a three run home run in the...
The Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies are scuffling, but the Cubs have experienced some success on the road recently.
Chicago will seek a season-high fourth straight win away from home Tuesday night, and Edwin Jackson will try to help with another strong outing.
