When it comes to baseball in Chicago, this has been one awful summer. The Cubs and White Sox are poised to finish last in their respective divisions in the same year for the second time, joining the 1948 season. The 186 losses for Chicago's two major league teams through Monday night's games are the most for the city since they combined to lose 188 times during the 1980 season, according to STATS. Decades after Ernie Banks declared ''Let's play two'' during his time with the Cubs, it seems as if one more game is one too many for the Windy City. All those losses have taken a toll on the attendance at Chicago's two ballparks. Attendance is down for the White Sox and the Cubs.

Chicago Cubs weekly review: another bad week

The Chicago Cubs had a golden opportunity to make some noise against division rival Milwaukee and to stymie the Atlanta Braves in their quest to become the National League East division champions.  The Cubs failed on all fronts. The club had a chance to make some movement in the division to at least save themselves from the NL Central division cellar by defeating the Brewers in...

While Konerko’s status for the 2014 campaign is uncertain, there are now questions surrounding his availability for the remainder of this season after he exited last night’s game with...

Daniel Bard Strongly Considering Pitching in Winter Ball to Get Ready for 2014 Season

Daniel Bard‘s 2013 season has been just as disastrous as his 2012 season. It’s no wonder that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to move forward in 2014. Bard, who was claimed off waivers by the Cubs from the Red Sox earlier this month, is strongly considering pitching in winter ball to get a head start on 2014, according to the Chicago Tribune’s Mark Gonzales. Bard has...

A Minor Review of 2013: White Sox

There is always a bit of a lull between the end of the minor league playoffs in September and the start of the annual top prospects lists in early November. Because of that gap, I’m breathing new life into an old feature that I wrote for the site in FanGraphs’ infancy back in 2008 and 2009. The series ‘A Minor Review of 2013′ will look back on some of the major happenings...

Cubs watch Pirates clinch playoff berth

All the Chicago Cubs had to do the past two days was look across the field and take note. They saw a postseason staple celebrate. Then, it was a longtime loser's turn. The Pittsburgh Pirates are headed to the playoffs for the first time in 21 years, clinching at least a National League wild card Monday night when they beat Chicago 2-1 and the Washington Nationals lost to St...

White Sox lose on Giambi's walk-off

Jason Giambi put it out of reach. The 42-year-old connected for a two-run, pinch-hit homer off Addison Reed (5-4) with two outs in the ninth inning to give Cleveland its 13th straight win over Chicago...
