NEW YORK (AP) -- Cliff Pennington hit an RBI single with two outs in the 15th inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks, boosted early by Gerardo Parra's bunt double, finally outlasted the New York Mets 5-4 in a back-and-forth classic Thursday to split an exhausting series at Citi Field. Arizona scored in the final three innings but couldn't close out the feisty Mets until Brad Ziegler retired Kirk Nieuwenhuis on an easy grounder with runners at second and third to end a game that lasted 5 hours, 46 minutes. Anthony Recker and Nieuwenhuis hit tying homers in consecutive extra innings for New York, which dropped its final home appearance before hosting the All-Star game July 16. In a span of four days, the teams played a 13-inning game, a 15-inning marathon and two others delayed by rain for a total of 3 hours. So it was only fitting that the finale went on and on throughout a humid afternoon as kids who lined up beyond the outfield wall in the eighth inning waited patiently to...

Zack Wheeler: Early Bust or Budding Brilliance?

When he debuted just a few weeks ago, Zack Wheeler was met with tremendous fanfare.  Since then, and a 5.09 ERA with nine earned runs given up later, there have been whispers amongst the fan base, the amateur pontiffs in social media, and overly-opinionated professionals like Craig Carton of WFAN, that Wheeler is a bust.  While it may be debatable whether or not he was called up...

Danny Muno Is Poised For Another Huge Second Half

Logan Verrett was knocked out of last night’s ballgame against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the third inning, but the B-Mets scored seven runs between the fifth and sixth innings to secure their 52nd win of the season. If you missed the recap here on MMN, you can see it here. How did the B-Mets get all those runs in such a short period of time? The answer to that question...

Report: Diamondbacks in talks for Gallardo

It’s no secret the Diamondbacks’ rotation is in need of a boost, and that boost may come in the form of veteran ace Yovani Gallardo. A report by CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman says the Diamondbacks and Brewers may be in early talks aimed at bringing the 27-year-old righty to Arizona, possibly in return for Tyler Skaggs.

Gerardo Parra bunts for a double against Mets

Video: Of course the Mets allowed this

After trying road trip, D-backs glad to be home for a spell

Up until the past week and a half, the road had been fairly kind to the Diamondbacks. They were 20-18 away from Chase Field and had won some big games in opponents' parks. But then came a brutal 10-game East Coast swing that probably has the D-backs clamoring for the comforts of home, especially after playing 14 total extra innings and sitting through more than four hours of...

Diamondbacks 5, Mets 3

Randall Delgado outpitched Matt Harvey for his first major league win in more than a year, and the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a five-game skid with a 5-3 victory over the New York Mets after a long rain delay Wednesday night. Cody Ross hit a three-run homer off Harvey to put Arizona ahead, and Delgado struck out a career-high nine in seven innings to give the NL West leaders their...

MMO Spotlight: Josh Satin Has Always Been A Good Hitter

It’s pretty easy rooting for Josh Satin. All the kid has really ever wanted to do is play baseball, and wherever he’s played, he’s excelled. Two things remain consistent about Satin’s baseball run over a lengthy span of years. The kid can hit and more often than not, he’s selected as an all-star. Satin was a three time all-star selection as a Wolverine for the Harvard Westlake...

Behind Skaggs, Diamondbacks roll

Tyler Skaggs came up this time with a little more riding on his start. Trade rumors have swirled, the bullpen has been overworked, and the Diamondbacks went over three weeks without a starter win before Randall Delgado’s performance in New York.
