TEAMS: Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels, Dallas Stars
Justin ArbogastIt’s been quite a fun time in the last few days for those of you that follow the NFL’s 32 teams on Twitter. Before the Bengals’ 19-13 playoff loss to the Houston Texans, the team’s official Twitter set off a little friendly trash talk towards the opposing team. It’s not something you see every day from media outlets who usually keep their tweets on the professional side of things. Earlier today, the Dallas Cowboys Twitter page sent some trash talk to other professional sports leagues. DallasCowboys.com staff writer Josh Ellis was getting pumped for baseball season, but then someone, using the team’s official account, chose to knock out two birds with one stone, dissing the MLB and the NHL. To no surprise, the tweet was deleted a few moments after it was sent. If I had to take a wild guess, the shots fired from the Cowboys Twitter page could have come from Cowboys digital media director Derek Eagleton, who sent out this eerily similar tweet today from his personal Twitter account. Similarly, in the category of news-nobody-cares-about, the NHL is back! RT @josh_ellis11: Just 6 weeks til pitchers and catchers, everybody. — Derek Eagleton (@derekeagleton) January 7, 2013 The lack of adoration for other Texas sports teams is somewhat surprising. The MLB’s Texas Rangers have had great success lately, making the World Series in 2010 and 2011 and then losing the first AL Wild Card Game last year. They have lost a lot of talent in CJ Wilson and Josh Hamilton, but it’s still a solid team. The NHL’s Dallas Stars won the Stanley Cup following the 1998-99 season and have a good mix of youth and veteran leadership going into the shortened 2013 season. Seeing as how the Cowboys haven’t won or made it to a Super Bowl since 1995, they’re little brothers to their neighboring teams in terms of recent championship pedigree. So what’s the moral of this story? Social media outlets are very powerful tools in today’s world. They should be used responsibly, especially when you’re representing an organization as big as the Dallas Cowboys.
