Found September 18, 2013 on The Other Paper:
One 2013's funnier plays happened during the Braves-Nationals game Tuesday night when Dan Uggla actually threw the ball backwards on fielder's choice to first, but the team still got the out at home. Confused? Here's the breakdown: Uggla whiffs on the throw, then picks up the ball. His relay throw to Freddie Freeman led to Denard Span being thrown out at home on a 3-6-4-3-2 double play. Or 3-6-4-4-3-2 —depending how you look at it. Washington still won 4-0, though, and swept the doubleheader. They've now won 27 of their last 37.

Uggla, J. Upton HRs lift Braves past Nats 5-2

Alex Wood showed a bit of youth and temper when he cursed out umpire C.B. Bucknor after being ejected in the sixth inning Wednesday but his fit of indignation seemed to give the Braves a much-needed spark at Nationals Park. Homers by Dan Uggla and Justin Upton fueled a three-run sixth inning that erased a two-run deficit and sent the Braves to a 5-2 win against Washington reducing...

Chopcast: Is there trouble in NL East paradise?

ATLANTA The Braves' doubleheader loss to the Nationals does not define or erase a season highlighted by the National League's best record to date (89-62) and some of the best organization moves in baseball. But it does raise some issues and concerns for a team limping toward the finish the line. Atlanta is just 4-6 in its last 10 games, 6-10 in the month of September. This...

Fatal fall at Atlanta's Turner Field ruled suicide

Authorities in Atlanta say the death of a man who fell over a railing at Turner Field has been ruled a suicide. Investigators with the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office said Thursday that they discussed the death of 30-year-old Ronald Lee Homer Jr. with his family last week before releasing their findings to the media. Police say Homer died after falling about 85 feet...

Braves give Andrelton Simmons day off on Wednesday to rest neck

The Atlanta Braves have had the NL East won for a very long time, a fact which allows them to give aching players a night off when they need it. Mark Bowman of MLB.com says that was the case for shortstop Andrelton Simmons on Wednesday night, as he was suffering from neck stiffness that he'd been experiencing since Tuesday morning. Prior to the victory over the Washington Nationals...

Simmons error lifts Nats over Braves 6-5

Pinch-hitter Chad Tracy had an RBI grounder against Craig Kimbrell in the three-run...

Andrelton and Andruw and Defense and Offense

Andrelton Simmons and Andruw Jones have a few things in common: they grew up in Curacao, they came up with the Atlanta Braves, they are superlative up-the-middle defenders with good power for their position but some other offensive flaws, and their names both start with “Andr.” I think that the final similarity between the two is this: they help demonstrate just how hard it is...

Atlanta Braves September Doldrums Giving Fans 2011 Flashbacks

The month of September...perhaps the unkindest of months to the Atlanta Braves and their fans in recent years. In 2011 the Braves were part of a monumental dual-league September collapse with the Boston Red Sox, as both teams squandered sizable leads for making the postseason and ended up sitting home in the fall. Could it happen again? Nah, the Red Sox are doing fine.  But seriously,

Nats come back for big 6-5 win over Braves in Game 1

After seeing their lineup go cold following a three-run first inning and their bullpen blow a lead they held for over seven innings the Nationals came through in the bottom of the ninth with a thrilling walkoff victory over the Atlanta Braves. Denard Span is the hero with a one-out RBI hit in the ninth off Craig Kimbrel aided by a Andrelton Simmons error to give the Nats the winning...
