It was for most of Sunday night an insignificant pre-season snoozer. Then the fists began flying and the blood began spilling and the staid old Air Canada Centre turned into a hepped-up cauldron of hate. Alas a crowd-pleasing melee that resembled a Slap Shot-era throwback ended with the Maple Leafs suffering a not-so-comedic setback. Most significant among the 201 penalty minutes doled out after a third-period line brawl was a 10-minute misconduct to Toronto forward David Clarkson for leaving the bench to join the hysterics. According to the NHL rulebook that penalty comes attached to an automatic 10-game suspension — hardly the beginning the Maple Leafs imagined when they signed Clarkson to a seven-year contract worth $36.75 million. For a player being paid handsomely to provide experienced leadership the transgression showed an utter lack of judgment. Toronto’s season opener goes a week from Tuesday in Montreal. Clarkson figures to have to wait for his regular-season debut until...

Goalie fight highlights Sabres-Leafs preseason line brawl (Video)

In case you needed a reminder that the NHL season is right around the corner, check out the massive line brawl that broke out in the third period of Sunday night's preseason game between the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs. The highlight of the brawl was the goalie fight between Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier and Sabres goalie Ryan Miller, which Bernier seemed to...

Suspended F Clarkson to play preseason game

The Maple Leafs will have suspended forward David Clarkson in their lineup for a preseason game against the Ottawa Senators. Clarkson received an automatic 10-game suspension from the NHL - that doesn't begin until the regular season - for leaving the bench to join a fight. Clarkson is allowed to play in preseason games, including Tuesday night's home game. Toronto coach...

David Clarkson contemplating appeal of 10-game suspension

There didn't seem to be much room for negotiating in Maple Leafs forward David Clarkson's 10-game suspension handed out on Monday night it's an automatic suspension for leaving the bench illegally. Period. But that doesn't look like it's going to stop Clarkson from appealing. While the other main parties of Sunday night's brawl have spoken to the media Clarkson...

Clarkson suspended for leaving bench

Toronto forward David Clarkson was suspended 10 regular-season games without pay for leaving the bench to take part in a fight during the Maple Leafs' game against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night. Clarkson's automatic suspension, which also includes the rest of the preseason, results from the game misconduct penalty he received for joining the brawl during the third period...

Automatic Suspension For David Clarkson- 10 Regular Season Games

NEW YORK -- Toronto Maple Leafs forward David Clarkson has been automatically suspended for 10 regular-season games, without pay, as a result of being assessed a game misconduct penalty for leaving the bench on an illegal line change to join an altercation during NHL preseason game No. 61 against th eBuffalo Sabres on Sunday, Sept. 22, in Toronto. At 10:01 of the third period...

Clarkson’s poor judgment puts Toronto in a tight spot

The NHL regular season hasn’t even started yet and David Clarkson has managed to damage the playoff hopes of his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs mess up their salary-cap situation and jeopardize their chances of signing defenceman Cody Franson. All this with one stupid decision. Leafs general manager David Nonis and head coach Randy Carlyle must be thrilled with their prize free...

Johnston: Leafs-Sabres shenanigans, Clarkson’s indiscretions will ding Leafs roster’s bottom line

The proprietor and I were sort of hoping for a nice, quiet Sunday night on KK, and that seemed to be the case until about 9:30, when the Maple Leafs and Bruins engaged in massive amounts of dumb and/or exciting fighting. Hockeyfights.com posted what may be the longest and most context-setting clip of the bouts (and you will all be shocked, of course, to find out that John Scott was...

Clarkson to play preseason game

The Maple Leafs will have suspended forward David Clarkson in their lineup Tuesday night for a preseason game against the Ottawa Senators, but will be without Phil Kessel. Clarkson received an automatic 10-game suspension from the NHL -- that doesn't begin until the regular season -- for leaving the bench to join a fight. Clarkson is allowed to play in preseason games, including...

David Clarkson Likely Facing 10-Game Suspension for Leaving Bench During Maple Leafs-Sabres Brawl (Video)

David Clarkson will probably have to wait awhile before making his regular-season debut in blue and white. Overshadowed by the goalie fighting and stick swinging during Sunday night’s Maple Leafs-Sabres line brawl was the fact that Clarkson, who signed with the Leafs in July after seven seasons in New Jersey, left the bench during the melee, subjecting him to an automatic 10-game...

Leafs drop Sabres in fight-filled game

The Maple Leafs and David Clarkson in particular will pay a high price for their high-spirited Band of Brothers moment Sunday at the ACC. The battle to win spots in the lineup for the Leafs and Buffalo Sabres a 5-3 Toronto win was trumped by a re-staging of the War of 1812 complete with grappling goalies. Clarkson got the worst of it facing an automatic 10-game suspension for leaving...

NHL Preseason Excitement

Generally all forms of preseason action are pretty boring, unless you’re watching Hard Knocks of course. Apparently the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs didn’t get this memo, as Sunday night’s preseason affair was played with the intensity of a rivalry playoff game. Already in the third period, things escalated quickly as Buffalo’s fighter, John Scott (6’8, 270 pounds...

TSN’s Insider Trading segment includes preseason praise and panning

TSN's Bob McKenzie, Darren Dreger and Pierre LeBrun discussed David Clarkson's suspension, Paul Bissonnette's appealing of his suspension, the probability of the NHL and NHLPA adopting hybrid icing and even expansion to Seattle in an "Insider Trading" segment, but pre-season hockey games aren't exactly covered with the intense scrutiny of regular-season...

NHL Hockey: Did John Scott Break the Hockey Code?

As I suspected, David Clarkson has been suspended by the NHL for 10 regular-season games for leaving the bench to join a fight/altercation. This is the second 10-game suspension of the pre-season already. The think that I find funny; the Toronto Maple Leafs are the only ones in this whole mess that will face any time on the beach. The Leafs Phil Kessel has a phone hearing fo rhis...

NHL Hands Down Suspensions To Maple Leafs

(Photo Credit: John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports) Buffalo, N.Y. — Following their roles during a brawl in Sunday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres, the NHL has handed down suspensions to David Clarkson and Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The players were suspended Tuesday after the NHL reviewed the incident. Kessel will serve […]

Afternoon Line

As Sunday night’s brawl between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Buffalo Sabres proved again, stupidity is frequently a hallmark of the NHL exhibition season, when the goons and the wannabes are all trying to catch an organization’s attention. Every year, the NHL playoffs provide the most entertaining and sensibly played hockey of the season. It’s far superior to the regular...
