Photo Courtesy of Harvard  Conor Frederick Contributing Writer Unless you've been living under a rock, then you'll know that David Ortiz just set a new record for most hits by a designated hitter Wednesday night against the Seattle Mariners. So, with that new record begs the question: Does Big Papi have a shot at the Hall of Fame? You could make a compelling argument for both sides. On one side, you have the people who say "Of course he belongs in Cooperstown! He has great numbers, he's been so clutch and he was a huge player in winning 2 World Series rings!" On the other side, people might say "Oh, well he was a DH, he's been linked to performance enhancers, etc." According to a CSNNE discussion, even if he has another stellar season like this, he might end up not even close to Cooperstown because he won't be that high up on the all-time home run list, not to mention the accusations of steroid usage that will surely stem from him having a...

David Ortiz’s Hits Record Reinforces His Place in Red Sox History, Adds to Resume That’s Still Growing

David Ortiz didn’t change much when he hammered a double into the left-center field gap Wednesday to record his 1,689th hit as a designated hitter. He simply reaffirmed that he’s one of the greatest Red Sox players of all time. Ortiz’s performance against the Mariners on Wednesday was fitting. Not only does Ortiz now hold the all-time record for hits by a DH with 1,690 following...

David Ortiz’s Offensive Prowess Shouldn’t Be Overshadowed By Hits Record (Video)

If there’s one thing we can be sure of, it’s that David Ortiz knows how to crush a baseball. Big Papi had a near record-breaking night Tuesday against the Mariners, and on Wednesday he looks to make history. While Ortiz may be most well-known for his ability to hit the long ball, he’s also proven he’s a well-rounded offensive player. NESN Nation’s Alison Smith breaks down...

Ortiz collected his 1,689th hit as a DH when he doubled to left-center field leading off the second inning Wednesday night against the Seattle Mariners. Sam Galanis Contributing Writer D’Angelo Ortiz may have had the best ninth birthday ever, thanks to his Papi. According to Pete Abraham, D’Angelo has been traveling with David Ortiz and the Sox since their series in Anaheim and for the first two games against Seattle. For his birthday on Wednesday, he took batting practice and stretched with the team before the game. Photo...

David Ortiz sets career hit record by a DH

Last night Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz passed Harold Baines for the number one spot in all-time hits for a designated hitter. Ortiz hit his 1,689th hit against the Seattle Mariners yesterday. The American League instituted the DH spot in 1973 and now Ortiz is at the top of the mountain for designated hitters. The milestone happened in the second inning when Big Papi hit a...

David Ortiz is on the cusp of history. With one hit on Wednesday night against the Seattle Mariners, the Red Sox slugger will become the all-time hits leader at the designated hitter position. Red Sox 11, Mariners 4

David Ortiz doubled in his first at-bat to become baseball's all-time leader in hits as a designated hitter and hit a two-run homer an inning later, leading the Boston Red Sox to an 11-4 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night. Ortiz entered the night tied with Harold Baines for the most hits as a DH and it took just one at-bat to claim the record. Ortiz doubled to...

Ortiz Sets Record, Doubront Shines In 11-4 Win

(Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)David Ortiz passed Harold Baines as the all-time DH hits leader with a second-inning double to help the Red Sox beat the Mariners last night, 11-4. Felix Doubront was again terrific—going seven solid innings and giving up just one earned run. The lefty seems to have put all the early game inconsistencies behind him and has become the second most dependable...

David Ortiz Says Manny Ramirez Is ‘Totally Different Person’ Nowadays, Thinks Slugger Could Help Rangers

Manny Ramirez sounds like a changed man. Just ask David Ortiz. Ortiz, who formed a potent 3-4 combo with Ramirez in Boston from 2003 to 2008, said on WEEI’s Salk & Holley Show Wednesday that he keeps in touch with his former teammate and that he has noticed a great deal of change in the 41-year-old slugger. “He’s a totally different person,” Ortiz said. “I’m really...

Red Sox Recap: Doubrant dominant as Sox pound Mariners

Doubront shutout the Mariners for six innings before giving up a two-out run in the seventh. Doubront threw 107 pitches with six strikeouts and only two walks. Doubront did not allow a base runner beyond...

A Papi Trout

As Major League Baseball heads into the All-Star break two players stood out for me personally this week. Being a former pitcher, surprisingly neither of them are pitchers. Instead, they are two hitters from the American League, Mike Trout and David Ortiz. First, there is David Ortiz. Big Papi this week became the leader in hits by a designated hitter. Ortiz is 37 years old and...

3 Stars of the Game: Game 93

Ryan MacLeod Contributing Writer For a second straight night the Red Sox offense was in sync and they pounded out 11 runs against the Mariners. Starting pitching was dominant, one of Doubronts best outings of the season and set the tone for the Sox all night long. Here are the 3 stars of the game: Star 3: Shane Victorino Victornio had a 2-4 night before being subbed out by JBJ for...

Vote: Who Deserves More Credit for the Red Sox’ First-Half Success?

They don’t hand out trophies for success before the All-Star break, but the Red Sox have to feel pretty good about their performance so far. The team entered Thursday with a record of 56-37, leading the AL East by three games and boasting the highest win total in the major leagues. We all how the players have performed this season. David Ortiz has come back better than ever from...

Game 94: Red Sox at Mariners - The Bats are Back

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer It’s safe to say the Boston bats just took a 2.5-game hiatus and have been safely returned to the Red Sox clubhouse. After back-to-back 11-run games, the Boston Red Sox (56-37) go for their third win in a row against the Seattle Mariners (40-51). David Ortiz became the all-time hits leader for a designated-hitter when he roped a double in his...

Boston Red Sox/Oakland Athletics Preview

The Boston Red Sox will start their final series before the all-star break Friday night against the Oakland Athletics at O.co Coliseum. The Red Sox will send quite possibly the American League Comeback Player of the Year on the mound to start the series.  John Lackey got off to a slow start in his return from elbow surgery, which sidelined him for the entire 2012 season. The pitcher...
