But to this day, one of the most impressive, manly and just plain awesome things that Ortiz has ever done came while he was still with the Twins. Ortiz suffered the injury while diving into home plate in the fourth inning of the Twins’ game against the Royals on May 4, 2001. He proceeded to homer in the fifth inning — broken right wrist and all — after informing his coaches that he was OK. “We asked David maybe 90 times or 100, I’m not sure, I lost track: Are you all right?” then-Twins manager Tom Kelly said after the game. “He said he was, so we let him hit. After he hit, the trainers said his wrist was starting to swell, so we got him out of there.” Ortiz ...

Pitch your butt off

David Ortiz is a stand-up guy, but he is struggling at the plate in the ALCS. Are Carlos Beltran and David Ortiz worthy of the Hall of Fame?

Over the weekend, the two most well regarded “clutch hitters” in baseball did their thing. Carlos Beltran won Game 1 of the NLCS with a 13th inning walk-off double, continuing his long trend of destroying the baseball in the postseason. On Sunday, David Ortiz hit a game tying grand slam in the 8th inning, capping a somewhat miraculous comeback when the Tigers seemed fully in...

Countdown to Cooperstown: David Ortiz

Bill James has a simple invention that he calls "The Favorite Toy". He uses a player's stats from his three previous seasons to assign an established performance level (similar to the algorithm used by Baseball Mogul). This formula projects David Ortiz to finish his career with exactly 500 home runs. With the exception of those connected to steroid usage, every eligible...

David Ortiz Has Interesting Reaction To Jose Iglesias’ Circus Catch

A.B. Crotch grabbing and ass slapping are as much a part of baseball as chewing tobacco and pine tar. There are many things baseball players do on the field that they would never do outside the park. These little quirks and habits are part of what makes baseball America’s pastime. (Yes, I just basically said that things like spitting and ball-adjusting = ‘Merica). The weird part...
