This song, which comes off Theophilus London’s Rose Island Vol. 1 mixtape earlier this year, is about as good a “diamond in the rough” track as you’re going to find in the hip-hop genre. I just found out about it recently (from fellow ‘Bleeder Jim Lyons) and it has remained near the top of the ‘Recently Played’ section of my iPod throughout the few weeks since.
It features two young up-and-coming stars in London, 25, and A$AP Rocky, 23, going in hard over an awesome beat that samples Peggy Lee’s 1966 version of “Big Spender” talking about their extravagant lifestyles abroad. And while most of mainstream hip-hop consists of rappers bragging about how rich they are and how much better their life is than yours, London and A$AP do it in a manner that doesn’t make you feel like you’ve heard the same crap a thousand times elsewhere.
I saw Theo open for the Cool Kids in Boston a couple years and ago and he was extremely impressive live. He draws from a bunch of different genres and influences and consistently brings it on tracks. He’s different…in a good way.
Anyways, you should definitely check out “Big Spender” below if you haven’t heard it already because it’s a first-class banger and is certainly not the last you’ll hear from these guys as they work on solidifying their respective spots in the genre.
