Denny Hamlin took the checkered flag Sunday at Kansas in a race that saw engine problems plague a number of drivers and nearly all car companies. Martin Truex Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle rounded out the top five. Engine failures cost several drivers Sunday, including polesitter AJ Allmendinger, Clint Bowyer, Bobby Labonte, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch and Brian Vickers. Every car make other than Ford experienced engine issues. Allmendinger held the lead initially Sunday, but his car had engine troubles throughout the race, clearing the way for Truex to take over. Truex grabbed the lead kept it for much of the race, with few drivers mounting a serious challenge until the race's waning laps, when Denny Hamlin passed him. Clint Bowyer brought out the race's first caution on Lap 52, when he spun out on turn four while trying to reach pit road. Bowyer was running ninth at the time, but had to take his Toyota to the garage. He eventually returned, but engine troubles continued to take their toll on the No. 15 car. "It just wasn't our day," Bowyer said from the garage. The race's second caution flag came on Lap 132, thanks to debris on the track. Shortly afterward, Bobby Labonte's No. 47 car spun out on pit road because of engine issues, creating further debris. The third caution of the day came with a little less than 80 laps to go, when Juan Pablo Montoya's car scraped the fence on a turn. Damage was minimal, and Montoya returned to the field. Allmendinger was the polesitter Sunday, followed by Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin and Mark Martin. Former winners at Kansas who were in the field Sunday included Greg Biffle, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon, all of whom have multiple victories here. Johnson is the most recent victor at Kansas.
