PLAYERS: Derek Jeter
TEAMS: New York Yankees
The New York Yankees placed Derek Jeter on the disabled list with a Grade 1 right quadriceps strain Friday. Jeter played one game with the big-league Yankees after returning from his last DL stint, which he spent recovering from the ankle injury he first suffered in the 2012 AL Championship Series. It’s terrible news for the Yankees and frustrating news for their captain, who has seen his club struggle offensively in 2013 with a group of shortstops that have managed a .210 batting average with a .268 on-base percentage and no power to speak of. But few seem to be taking it worse than baseball fans who like Jeter and don’t want to see him endure a long and drawn-out career decline. Though Jeter enjoyed a fine offensive season just last year — and though the Yankees hold an option on his contract for 2014 and don’t have any other capable-hitting shortstops to speak of — plenty of Jeter’s fans took to Twitter to respectfully, lovingly and often-depressingly insist he retire.

Jeter waiting to be cleared

Derek Jeter stood in an imaginary bullpen batter’s box as Andy Pettitte and Phil Hughes threw yesterday at Fenway Park. Jeter said it was to get timing on pitches while on the disabled list.
