For a sports city with a supposed reputation for producing blue collar, grind-it-out teams, the Phillies have become surprisingly West Coast in recent years. We have Oakland with Jimmy Rollins, San Diego with Cole Hamels, and if Chase Utley wasn't enough for LA, we've even got a little Hollywood with latest draft pick, Kelly Dugan. A switch-hitter taken by the Phils with the #75 pick (the highest the Phils selected) in this year's draft, Kelly is also the son of comedy director Dennis Dugan, known for such classics, near-classics and minor missteps as Happy Gilmore, Problem Chid, Saving Silverman, The Benchwarmers and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (feel free to debate which are which!) Not shy about his movie biz roots, Kelly is expected to be signing his contract today in Boston on the set of pappy's new flick, Grown Ups, and will be joined by stars like Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade and Salma Hayek. Just like your first summer job out of high school, right?
Dugan, who like recently departed GM Pat Gillick, is a Notre Dame grad (the LA high school, not the Indiana college), saw his popularity surge in the last few months of his amateur career. During his senior season, he hit .379 with eight homers and 35 RBI in less than a hundred at bats. The Phils project him to possibly be a 20 home-run guy, but apparently are most attracted to his mental makeup. "We feel that guys with great makeup tend to achieve what they're supposed to," said Philly scout Marti Woelver. "It was a pretty unanimous decision in our draft room." Dugan, meanwhile, seems pretty jazzed about joining up with the WFCs. "The Phillies had called me a minute before the pick and asked me if I was in, and I just screamed 'Yes!' I was so excited," Kelly said. "The Phillies were my No. 1 choice."
Sounds good, Kells, but I'd advise you to drop the entourge and take off the suglasses once you actually meet up with the club. You don't want to be That Guy.
