Starter Jandy Vasquez picked up his first career win, though he should have won his last start when he threw five no-hit innings. The Pirates were able to break a 3-3 tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth, while Marcus Beltrez(3 IP) and Jonathan Minier finished off the game with a combined four scoreless innings. Minier, pitching in just his second pro game at age twenty-three, picked up his first career save. Tito Polo hit his second home run of the season, scored two runs and stole his 15th base. He was the only Pirates player successful in the team’s five stolen base attempts. Julio de la Cruz drove in his 19th run of the season. He also has 19 base hits this year.   PIRATES2    Box Score Result: Cardinals 7, Pirates 2 Starting Pitcher: Dario Agrazal Jr, RHP (1.59) – 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 0 HR Top Hitter: Michael de la Cruz, CF (.312) – 4-for-4, 3B, SB Other Notable Performers: Jhoan Herrera, 3B (.245) – 0-for-4 Richard Mitchell, RHP (2-2, 4.26) – 1.0 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 0 HR Yoel Gonzalez, C (.138) – DNP Game Notes: After winning three straight games last week, the Pirates lost for a fourth straight time, dropping their record under the .500 mark. Michael de la Cruz returned to the field for the first time in five games(minor shoulder injury) and had an outstanding game. He had four hits, including his second triple of the season. He also stole a base and had an outfield assist. Dario Agrazal Jr continues to look good in his first season of pro ball. He now has a 1.59 ERA after seven starts, with six walks allowed, no homers and a .260 BAA. Agrazal got the no-decision today and still has a perfect 4-0 record. Relievers Richard Mitchell and Luylli Miranda each gave up three runs in one inning of work. Player Of The Day On Monday, Jose Regalado pitched 4.1 innings and picked up the loss. While the overall results weren’t that good that game (3 R in 4.1 IP), Regalado continued to show two impressive qualities, great control and strong strikeout rate. With no walks and five strikeouts, he now has a 2/35 BB/K rate in 34.1 innings this year. He also has an impressive .197 BAA. According to someone very familiar with the two DSL Pirates teams, Regalado is the best pitcher right now on either team. Regalado is a 6’3″ right-hander, who is 21-years-old. He is in his third season in the league, although his 2011 season consisted of just five innings over four relief appearances. Last year, Regalado got plenty of time on the mound, making ten starts and four relief appearances. He was 5-1, 3.45 in 57.1 innings, with 16 walks, 41 strikeouts and he didn’t allow a single home run. He also had a strong 1.42 GO/AO ratio. This year, he gave up his first career homer, which came in his first start of the season. With the stats he is putting up so far this year and the high praise from someone who has seen him pitch numerous times, Regalado is a pitcher to watch in the DSL. Injury Updates The Pirates have had to go to some unfamiliar players at first base this season, due to a rash of ankle injuries to their normal first baseman. Yunelky Adames is the worst among the group. He looked to be breaking out in a big way, hitting five homers through his first 19 games, but Adames broke his ankle and he is done for the season. Jose Salazar injured his ankle hitting the first base bag awkwardly. He has missed three weeks already, but should return in a week or so. Dennis Hurtarte injured his ankle when a runner spiked him, requiring stitches. He has missed 11 days, but could return tomorrow if the trainer gives him the okay to play.

Pirates Strand 10 Runners in Third Straight Loss, End Locke’s Unbeaten Streak

Jeff Locke allowed only two baserunners through sixth innings, but lost command in the 7th. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Two Pirates line drives to the outfield found Oakland gloves, stranding four of the 10 runners the Pirates left on base in a 2-1 loss Monday night. The Bucs collected nine hits to the Athletics’ three, but went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position to drop...

First Pitch: The Problem With the Pirates Offense

Dave Cameron of FanGraphs had a few interesting tweets about the Pirates offense this morning. I keep hearing that the Pirates can't hit. Their non-pitchers have the 11th best wRC+ in baseball. http://t.co/X8M0Jytf3b — David Cameron (@DCameronFG) July 9, 2013 Of the eight PIT batters with 200+ PA, seven of them have been above average offensively this year. http://t.co...

Sixty-year-old gets shot at pitching

The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted Paul Risso , a right-handed pitcher out of the College of San Mateo, with the 113th overall pick in the sixth round of the 1973 Major League Baseball Draft. Unfortunately, a career-ending shoulder injury in Risso's final college game ended his big league dreams. Or so he thought. Now 60, Risso is trying to make a comeback, and in May, the civil...

Unassuming Locke among unlikeliest All-Stars

Jeff Locke understands the entire premise is borderline preposterous. Four months ago, the 25-year-old left-hander was simply hoping to escape spring training with a spot at the back end of the Pittsburgh Pirates' starting rotation. Now he's fielding questions about whether he'd feel comfortable appearing in the All-Star game on one day's rest. No, seriously. ...

A.J. Burnett has a Pretty Tough Time Spelling Teammate Pedro Alvarez’s Name

This is pretty hilarious stuff from A.J. Burnett. According to a story via Larry Brown Sports, the Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher, had good intentions when he went to Twitter yesterday to voice his displeasure that teammate Pedro Alvarez, who has 22 home runs this season, was left off the NL Home Run Derby team by David Wright. Well his beef with Wright quickly became secondary when...

Prospect Watch: Stetson Allie Homers For Bradenton; JaCoby Jones Hits First Homer

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Game 88: A's 2 Pirates 1

You know this drill: Jeff Locke pitched pretty well, but the Pirates left ten guys on base tonight, include another maddening performance with runners in scoring position. The Pirates came up 11 times tonight with runners in scoring position and went 2-for-11. Both hits came in the seventh inning; a Travis Snider pinch-hit single that moved Clint Barmes from second to third, and...

Pirate Fans Have a Lot to Cheer About in Pittsburgh

I just recently went on a baseball trip to Pittsburgh and I’ve never seen the fans so excited about the Pirates. This was the fourth time going to PNC Park and the fans have never had this much to be excited about. The Pirates had the best record in baseball at the time (June 29) and the stadium was rocking. Pittsburgh has been mostly a Steelers and Penguins town since the Pirates...

It’s a good night to watch Buccos late-night baseball from Pittsburgh

As of this very minute, the Pittsburgh Pirates are a .600 baseball club. It’s a great story. They’ve slipped a little bit lately, and they’re mostly blacked out in my city of residence; so I am not getting the opportunity to enjoy their ride each night watching on MLB.tv. However, tonight the Pirates take on the Oakland Athletics from Pittsburgh. Their de facto ace Francisco...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Oakland A’s – Game 89

I’m not sure what was worse.  That game, Brandon Inge, or Twitter afterwards. People were screaming collapse.  The usual suspects were writing it off as just a few bad breaks.  Those same usual suspects were using the same tired mantras they used last year too.  When they said it wasn’t a collapse. Do I think…

Minor League Schedule: Holmes and Sandfort Lead Full Slate On Thursday

Indianapolis had their game against Columbus suspended in the 13th inning with the score tied at four runs apiece. The two teams will complete that game prior to Saturday’s meeting in Indianapolis. West Virginia’s game was suspended in the third inning. They will complete that game today, then play their regularly scheduled game, which will now be seven innings. Altoona returns...

Who Should The Pirates Target?

I’ve been spouting off about how the Pirates should make a trade for an legitimate player with a track record who can help right now.  Not the same Travis Snider type acquisition I am terrified of them making. I’m not talking about platoon players either.  If you want more incomplete baseball players with poor approaches…
