White Sox manager Robin Ventura certainly cut the breaks and pulled a wild card on us all by calling up 27 year-old relief pitcher Duente Heath instead of others like Brian Omogrosso, Brent Morel, or Jordan Danks. First of all, I should apologize to all of you non "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" fans who didn't understand the 'wild card' reference above. But if you're not an Always Sunny fan, I'm not sure how much of an apology you deserve anyway. But getting back to the news, it was reliever Duente Heath called up Friday afternoon in wake of Gordon Beckham being placed on the 15 day disabled list (expected to miss at least 6 weeks). Most realized it would be a pitcher called up from AAA after Ventura's post game comments that led us to believe that's where he wanted extra insurance to come from. Heath, who will probably be stretched out more than they'd like to stretch out someone like Brian Omogrosso, made his major league debut last season for the White Sox but only pitched in 3 games and tallied 2.0 IP. He's got a long minor league career, though, and has had a good deal of success in the Sox farm system dating back to 2010 in both Birmingham and Charlotte. His most success came last season as he went 4-3 for the Charlotte Knights with a dominant 1.48 ERA. He made 4 starts and 32 relief appearances, throwing 67.0 innings. He's got versatility and he's got good stuff, so he should certainly help the Sox coaching staff save the other relievers a bit, as it wouldn't be good to overwork them so early on in the season. There's really no way to tell how long Heath will be with the club. It could be the 1 1/2 - 2 months that Gordon Beckham is expected to miss, or it could just be one week or two. It really depends on how well the starting pitchers perform in the near future.
