Duke athletic officials confirmed early Thursday afternoon that wide receiver Blair Holliday “was involved in a boating accident on Lake Tillery” Wednesday. After being transported via helicopter to the UNC Trauma Center in Chapel Hill, Holliday is currently in critical condition after suffering head injuries in the incident.

There are unconfirmed reports that Holliday is in a coma, but the official release by the university did not mention that.

A North Carolina Wildlife official did confirm to the Raleigh News & Observer that Holliday was involved in a jet ski accident, and that Holliday collided with one of a teammate who was also on a jet ski.  The name of the teammate was not released, although the wildlife official told the paper that player refused treatment at the scene.

“First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with Blair, his parents, Leslie and Rick, and the entire Holliday family,” Blue Devils head coach David Cutcliffe said in a statement. “The Holliday family is one of tremendous character and strength, and is truly an inspiration for all of us.  Secondly, we could not be more appreciative of the care and support Blair has received here at UNC Hospitals. The doctors, nurses and support staff have been truly outstanding.

“We ask that you continue to keep Blair and his family in your thoughts, and also respect their privacy in this time of concern.”

Appearing in 10 games last season, Holliday caught three passes for 30 yards. Exiting spring practice, the sophomore was projected as a likely starter this upcoming season.

Our hopes and prayers are with the player, hopefully he is able to make a full recovery from the injuries.
