With their first pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Eagles drafted offensive tackle Lane Johnson out of Oklahoma. It was no secret that the Eagles were interested in drafting an offensive tackle at fourth overall. They had been linked to Johnson a lot as of late and it looked for a second like they may not have the opportunity to take Johnson. After Eric Fisher and Luke Joeckel went first and second overall, Miami traded up to the third overall pick and it looked like they may take Johnson. However, in a surprising move, the Dolphins took Oregon pass rusher Dion Jordan. This opened up the option for the Eagles to take a solid player in Johnson or trade back. They let plenty of time run down so there’s no denying that they wanted to see what phone calls they got. We can only assume no one was offering anything they were overly interested in and decided to take Johnson. This will provide them more flexibility on the offensive line for the upcoming 2013 season. With the return of Jason Peters and Todd Herremans, they can line up Johnson at right tackle and move Herremans back inside to right guard. Johnson has the skill set to come in and start from day one and will really solidify the line. He has plenty of athleticism and has played a lot of positions during his football career. When you have a pick as high as the Eagles did this year, you don’t want to draft a player who can be a bust. I think Johnson was a safe pick who should pan out as a solid player.
