Today must begin with erratum. Yesterday, I said that Al Davis was 27 years old when he took over as coach and GM of the Raiders in 1963. Since Davis was born in 1929, he was actually in his 34th journey around the sun. Believe it or not, I did not make an arithmetic mistake there; the number “27” was a page reference I had written down and I mistakenly inserted that number into yesterday’s text. Obviously, that got past the Curmudgeon Central spell-checker and proved once again that I am the world’s worst proofreader. Thanks to the several readers who pointed out that error without using the word “dumbass” in their note to me. Mea culpa…!
