Russ Smith Jr., Fresh off last night’s NCAA Title game win over the Michigan Wolverines, has declared for the NBA Draft. Or at least his Dad, Russ Smith Sr. has done it for him. According to an AP release marked as “URGENT” (Seriously, I thought the North Koreans were attacking us for a minute, then I was relieved to see it was just about college basketball) Russ Smith Sr. announced that Russ Smith Jr. will forgo his college basketball eligibility and declare for the NBA Draft. Russ Smith the Elder claims that Russ Smith the Younger will make his declaration in the coming week. The father has been blowing up Twitter about this. It seems he won’t let him go back. Russ Smith averaged 18.9 points this season including 23.3 in six NCAA tournament games. But he was terrible in the title game: 3-for-16 from the field, benched to start the 2nd half, foul trouble and questionable decisions/shot selection down the stretch that helped the favorite team of Kate Upton get back into the game. So should you be buying or selling the draft stock of Russ Smith? Here’s where we have him mocked in our latest NBA mock draft. (First Round of NBA mock draft here) 37. Portland (from MIN)- Russ Smith, G, Louisville, 6-0, Jr. In need of depth all over, Blazers add a dynamic scorer in Russ Smith. Here’s our summary of Russ Smith’s potential, from our full scouting report you can read here Part of what makes Russ Smith such a threat on the floor is his aggressiveness on both ends. However, that also tends to be his downfall as his decision-making and shot selection are very questionable at times since he tries to force too many shots. Although Russ Smith is a 6-foot-1 combo guard, he still possesses a ton of talent and figures to be a borderline first-round pick if he declares for the 2013 NBA Draft. Paul M.
