One question many folks asked immediately upon new Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon’s hiring was, ‘What kind of offense does he run?’. For twenty two years Maryland fans have been accustomed to seeing the Gary Williams flex cut. But it is a new era and fans should be prepared to see a new offense this season: the motion.

Here we are going to take a look at an initial double stack set, which starts as a 1-2-2 and has two post players set screens for the guards on each side of the basket. In the examples below, one possession leads to an easy bucket inside, while the other leads to a wide open jump shot on the wing. Also notice the excellent rebounding position under the basket during the jump shot. Fans can expect an efficient, precise offense from the Terps moving forward.

1) 1-2-2 Motion with feed into the post

Two players who begin down low cut up to the top of the key.

Point guard passes to a wing and cuts down towards the paint.

Point guard cuts through the paint and to the far side corner.

Big men replace one another down low and one pops to the top of the key.

You now have a far side cut on the wing to draw out a fourth defender to the perimeter.

As you can see, you now have one-on-one matchup in the paint with room to operate inside.

And here is the play in its entirety:

2) 1-2-2 Motion leads to catch and shoot jumper off screen

Again, a double stack inside with the bigs setting screens.

This time the point guard passes to the nearside wing who has popped out.

The point guard cuts to the baseline and a big sets the screen as the ball handler moves to the top of the key.

The ball is transfered to the opposite wing and the ball handler makes a backdoor cut down to the baseline.

Meanwhile, the guard on the baseline now rubs off the big man back on the far side for a wide open look.

Again, the play as it develops in its entirety:
