Welcome back, Walter. Former Celtics forward Walter McCarty, a fan favorite during his seven-plus seasons in Boston, has joined new head coach Brad Stevens‘ staff as an assistant coach, the team announced Wednesday. Used primarily off the bench, McCarty posted modest numbers (5.2 points per game over his 10-year career) but gained the adoration of Celtics fans — including C’s broadcaster Tommy Heinsohn — for his tough, physical play. After retiring after the 2005-06 season, McCarty spent three seasons as an assistant under Rick Pitino at Louisville and another on Jim O’Brien‘s Indiana Pacers staff before landing a job with the Celtics. “I am really excited about our assistant coaching staff that we have here in Boston,” Stevens said in a statement released by the team. “In this group, we have successfully assembled a passionate, intelligent, hard-working, and humble staff with a diverse set of experiences in coaching.  We are all eager to get to work with this year’s team, and take great pride in being a part of the Boston Celtics organization.” Also joining Stevens’ staff will be longtime NBA assistant Ron Adams, whose addition was first rumored last month, and Micah Shrewsberry. Shewsberry worked under Stevens at Butler from 2008-11 before moving on to Purdue, where he served as an assistant for the last two seasons. Filed under: Boston Celtics, Headlines, Zack Cox
