Derek Self was a four-year star while pitching for the Louisville Cardinals. The Kentucky native went a combined 19-5 and sported a 3.43 era in 215 plus innings for the Cardinals. The following are the major awards he picked up while in college: 2012 Third Team All-BIG EAST NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List 2009 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American During the summer of 2010, Derek pitched for Chatham of the Cape Cod League. He went 3-0 and had a 2.36 era in 42 innings of work. He walked just 3 batters and he fanned 17 that summer. In June of 2011, the Oakland A's selected him in the 27th round of the MLB draft. Electing to return for his senior season, he was then selected by the Nationals in the 9th round in 2012. Derek was then sent to play for the Auburn Doubledays of the New York-Penn League. He went 1-3, had a 3.27 era and was tied for the league-lead in saves (14). He appeared in 26 games and pitched 33 innings as well.
