By most any statistical measurement you care to use, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have one of the worst defenses in the NFL. The switch from the Tampa-2 to more single-high safety looks has caused the Bucs to give up a league-leading eight pass plays of 40 yards or more. Their nine sacks is in the bottom half of the NFL, and only the Detroit Lions have given up more than their 6.2 yards per rushing attempt. It's a long way from the halcyon days of Warren Sapp(notes), Derrick Brooks(notes), and Simeon Rice(notes), and one of the best defenses in recent memory when Tampa Bay won Super Bowl XXXVII at the end of the 2002 season. One of the reasons the Bucs haven't been able to maintain a standard of defensive excellence is the disappointing tenure of defensive end Gaines Adams(notes), who was drafted fourth overall in the 2007 draft and has a grand total of 13.5 sacks in his three seasons, and only one so far in 2009.
