Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer The Boston Red Sox (59-39) picked up a 4-2 win over their hated-rival New York Yankees (51-45) Friday to open the unofficial second half of the season without the benefit of a run or RBI from the heart of their lineup. The balance on this team is what makes it one of the best in baseball and the Sox continue to show it on a nightly basis. They will have a chance to do so today against one of the better pitchers in the American League. In case you were wondering, yes, those 3-5 hitters will be called upon at some point today to deliver. And they will need to if the Sox want to take Game 2 of this series. A pitchers’ duel may break out at Fenway Park as Boston’s John Lackey opposes New York’s Hiroki Kuroda. Lackey is 7-6 with a 2.78 ERA on the year and has arguably been the Red Sox ace for the last two months. He has a 1.32 ERA in home games and has a 2.08 ERA in day games, boding well for this afternoon’s start. Here is the Red Sox lineup today (...

Boston Red Sox pitcher Andrew Bailey facing possible surgery

(USATSI) BOSTON—According to a report from Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com, Boston Red Sox pitcher Andrew Bailey was placed on the 15-day disabled list with what Red Sox manager John Farrell terms as “significant damage” to his right shoulder. As a result, Bailey is “weighing undergoing what would be season-ending surgery” according to Edes. Pitching in his old team’s stomping...

The All-Star Game/Home Field Debate: the arguments, the stats, and possible alternatives

We all remember the 2002 All-Star game. Both teams famously ran out of pitchers, thus ending the game in an embarrassing, unsatisfying tie. Not wanting another episode like this, the following year the MLB decided the game would now determine home field advantage for the World Series. This year marks the 10th anniversary of a so-called “meaningful All-Star game....

Series Preview: Yankees @ Red Sox

The best rivalry in baseball resumes tonight as the Yankees head to Fenway Park to take on the first-place Red Sox. Both teams have won 5 out of their last 10 games, with the Red Sox trying to hold on to first place in the American League while their hated rivals try to catch Texas for the second wild-card spot and have a little more work to do when it comes to the east. With the...

Yankees Alex Rodriguez to Have MRI on Injured Quad

It’s an open secret that the New York Yankees don’t want third baseman Alex Rodriguez, back in the lineup, not with the impending suspensions that are supposedly coming from Major League Baseball, so this is an injury they may welcome. Rodriguez, who was expected to return to the team on Monday, after missing the first four months of the season due to a hip injury, injured...

A-Rod says Michael Pineda is a ‘very special kid’

Probably the most significant minor league rehab assignment this season for the New York Yankees has nothing to do with the two Alex Rodriguez or Derek Jeter. Sure, they are the two most expensive players on the Yankees roster who have struggled to comeback from injuries suffered last season, but someone who has yet to play a game for the team since coming over in a trade is much...

Yankees: You are breaking my heart

Last night’s 7-8, 11th inning loss to the Boston Red Sox might have been the icing on the cake. New York Yankees (Photo credit: Keith Allison) Clearly it time is up for the New York Yankees, as holding down the fort is no longer a practical game plan. The Yankees losing two of three games up in Fenway Park to start the second-half of the season is not what needed to happen. It...

Jeter returns to disabled list

Derek Jeter is back on the disabled list. The Yankees placed their captain on the 15-day DL on Friday. He strained his right quad in his first game back with New York last week after being out all season with a broken left ankle. The Yankees had waited to make a decision, using the four days of the All-Star break for the shortstop to receive treatment. But with New York set to...

Should the Sox trade Lester?

Conor Frederick Contributing Writer It's no secret that Jon Lester has had his struggles this season. After getting off to a flying 6-0 start, he's been 2-6 with a 6.27 ERA over his last 11 starts, according to CSNNE. Talk about a downhill slide. So, the question becomes do we use him as a bargaining chip in a possible trade? He has a $13 million option for next year, but...

Yankees Place Derek Jeter on 15-Day Disabled List With Quad Strain

Derek Jeter has played a grand total of one big league game this season, and he won’t play another for at least another week or so. The Yankees placed the shortstop on the 15-day disabled list Friday after his latest injury setback. The move is retroactive to July 12, but the 39-year-old’s status after the stint runs out may be up in the air, too. Jeter, who rushed back from...

VIDEO: Unbelievable double play by Chris Stewart

New York Yankees catcher Chris Stewart made a defensive play today that will probably go down as one of the best of the season. Stewart went behind homeplate for a routine pop fly, the ball kept carrying so Stewart had to reach into the stands and actually fell into them. That wasn’t the impressive part though Daniel Nava of the Boston Red Sox tried to tag up from first, a smart...

Brandon Snyder Gets Nod at Third, Daniel Nava Sits As Red Sox Welcome Yankees to Fenway

After a lengthy West Coast swing and a four-day break for the All-Star festivities, baseball is finally back at Fenway Park. The Red Sox will open the unofficial second-half of their season with a marquee matchup, welcoming the Yankees to Fenway for the first time this season. Brandon Snyder will start third base for the Sox in Friday’s series opener after Brock Holt saw the majority...

Yankees' Michael Pineda's pitch count up to 80

Although no longer officially in a rehab assignment, New York Yankees starting pitcher Michael Pineda is throwing as if it still is. Pineda's rehab assignment ended, but the Yankees have kept him in Triple-A to build up arm strength and increase his pitch count. Right now, that count stands at approximately 80 pitches. Pineda threw 82 pitches in the Scranton-Wilkes Barre...

Yankees' general manager Cashman expects A-Rod to return Monday

According to Yankees' general manager Brian Cashman, tt appears that Alex Rodriguez is nearing the end of his rehab assignment and will be back in the lineup on Monday against the Texas Rangers. As reported by Byran Hoch of MLB.com, "Rodriguez is currently playing with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and hit a two-run homer on Thursday against Louisville. Yankees...

Report: Dustin Pedroia extended soon; Affect Robinson Cano?

During the all-star break, the Boston Red Sox and second baseman Dustin Pedroia were in talks regarding a contract extension that may be worth as much as $100 million. Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports is estimating the deal to be as long as five or six years, with a likely annual salary of $20 million. Pedroia is signed through next season at $10 million with the following year being...

Indians finding success even with a small budget

The endless debate about baseballs unfair financial system will go on as long as some teams spend more than 150 million and others less than 50 -- million. When the Yankees top four paid players -- Alex Rodriguez, CC Sabathia, Mark Texeira, Derek Jeter and Vernon Wells -- make more than 17 entire teams in major league baseball, something is askew. Except it might not matter as much...
