I want to make sure that we at Jose's Army Ted's Army don't go overboard with the Jose Iglesias love fest.  But when Peter Gammons goes on the Mut & Merloni and says that Iglesias is, right now "very close to" being the best defensive shortstop in all of baseball?  It's hard to hide my, er, smile.

But amidst all the compliments, Gammons did rain a bit on the "Jose for Opening Day" parade (via WEEI):

Jose Iglesias has been turning heads with his play at shortstop in spring training, but Gammons said the young Cuban needs more seasoning in the minor leagues.

"It may be three months or whatever, but I think he does need those at-bats in the minors," Gammons said. "What's he started, 160 [actually 171] games in the minor leagues? That's the equivalent of one season. He's still a ways away in terms of getting the experience and seeing the balls out of pitcher's hands to recognize breaking balls."

Gammons also talked about his guess for the 5th starter, and gave the nod to Doubrant.

"I just have this sense that Doubront is the favorite, and that Padilla is a guy that's going to go back and forth between relieving and starting. I may be wrong there. … It's also, as we know, complicated by the fact that Doubront, Miller and [Franklin] Morales all are out of options. I don't know about Miller, [but] I don't think there's any chance that Doubront or Morales would get through waivers. I don't think there's a chance in the world."

Doubrant is the guy that makes the most sense for that role.  He's either going to be a guy that can help the Sox at the major league level, or he's not.  Let's found out which it's going to be.  And with him being out of Minor League options, the Sox are too.  Start him or trade him.

Peter also equated MLB's new expanded playoffs to March Madness stating, "I think that these elimination games will create a lot more interest than a seven-game series."  He's certainly got a point there.  If you want to suck the casual fan into their living room for 3-4 hours to watch a baseball game (and boy do they), Selig has figured out a way to do just that.
