spritezSo you might remember that, yesterday, we posted about a “banned German Sprite ad” featuring a girl giving a dude a beej, then suddenly craving Sprite and having a bottle of it spray into her face. How different a place the world would be if only money shots were lemon-lime scented.

Alas, it turns that the ad is fake and not German at all but was, rather, made in Brooklyn. Das nervt!

The commercial was never even intended to be aired, explains John Jones IV, the actor featured in the ad:

“The funny thing is, it’s a spec commercial—it’s not even real,” he said today over the phone from his home in Williamsburg. [Ed. note: Surfuckingprise]

“These kinds are really in-your-face,” Jones said, explaining that risqué spec ads are usually created to catch the eyes of executives for exposure. “The controversy is it’s the fact that she’s a white girl blowing me and I’m black. That role reversal freaks people out.”

Maybe it’s because we’re used to seeing couplings of black men with white women, but the interracial aspect didn’t really quite hit us as hard as the fact that a girl was giving a guy a ******* in a commercial. Call us prudes. Loudly and with a whip. Although, at one point, we did find ourselves wondering if they were trying to equate black men’s penises with Sprite bottles, which we’re sure comes with it’s own set of problems. Literally. And, you know, we also briefly wondered what a woman on her knees had to do with refreshing carbonated beverages.

Which brings us to this question: Do you think pairing interracial (or interethnic) couples in commercials or movies with an emphasis on sex rather than romantic love is ultimately helpful? We know a lot of fellow Latinos who, while still dating a Latino, are with someone who is of a different race. And it’s not really an issue for them or for us (although maybe their grandparents might disagree). And we wonder what they think of having their relationships reduced to, you know. A ******* for the sake of being subversive.
