The Cardinals are off tonight, which means that the Pirates can move back into a first place tie with a win over the Brewers. Gerrit Cole gets the ball and will try to do just that for the Bucs tonight. His last start at PNC was in almost as big of a spot, as he started against the Diamondbacks after the Pirates lost two of three to the Cardinals, and he turned in an excellent six-inning outing. Like tonight, that start also came with a little bit of extra rest. Cole sure seems like a guy that thrives on big moments, so hopefully we see his best stuff tonight.  Yovani Gallardo starts for the Brewers. He has, for the most part, just not managed to find his stride at all in 2013. Even though his surface stats are OK since the break (3.67 ERA), the peripherals are just not promising at all and his. The Pirates beat him twice in May, though obviously that was a few months ago.  First pitch tonight is at 7:05.

Jones, Liriano Rebound in 5-0 Victory as Pirates Tie for NL Central Lead

As he has done so many times before in stretches when the Pirates struggle, Francisco Liriano delivered a masterful start to propel Pittsburgh to a 5-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Liriano (15-6) pitched eight dominant, shutout innings and allowed just two hits while walking two as the Pirates (78-56) pulled into a tie atop the NL Central with the Cardinals (78-56) in front...

Victor Black is the PTBNL in the Marlon Byrd deal

This news came across right before last night's game started, which means it's a little stale now, but I think it's worth mentioning that Victor Black will go to the Mets as the player to be named in the Marlon Byrd/John Buck trade. Black is a really nice relief prospect and he's been mentioned as the "Closer of the Future" for the Pirates, but that means...

Teammates will miss John Axford after trade to Cards

MILWAUKEE -- Though many were shocked by the news, a few of John Axford's now former teammates completely understand the business side of the former closer's trade to St. Louis. A leader in the bullpen and in the clubhouse, Axford's presence will be missed by those he impacted the most. "Pretty shocking, but great opportunity for him," Brewers closer Jim Henderson...

Brewers not ready to lie down and call it a season yet

The Milwaukee Brewers have made it clear to the contending teams in the National League Central: They aren't going to lie down. Led by yet another strong start from Yovani Gallardo, the Brewers wrapped up their six-game road trip against division contenders with a 4-0 win over the Pirates. Following a series win in Cincinnati, Milwaukee won two-of-three in Pittsburgh. "We...

DSL Pirates 2013: Ten Prospects to Watch

Complete DSL Coverage The Hitters The Pitchers Ten Prospects to Watch Last Year’s Ten Prospects to Watch As I mention every time I do these things, it is a lot more difficult to predict the top prospects at this level than it is at any other level. This season I have been fortunate enough to get much more input on the players. So rather than relying solely on things like bonuses...

Austin Meadows has been promoted to Jamestown. The GCL Pirates lost today in a one game playoff, ending their season. After the game, first round picks Austin Meadows and Reese McGuire were promoted to Jamestown, per their Twitter accounts. Game 132: Pirates 7 Brewers 1

Really, I'm not sure that I can pick my favorite moment from this game. Marlon Byrd's game-sealing three-run homer into centerfield bushes followed by a simultaneous Steve Blass and Twitter explosion of Byrd puns was pretty great, but all it really did was put the finishing touches on a game that had looked like a win for a while. For my money, I'm not sure I've ever...

Game 134: Pirates vs. Cardinals Recap

Source: FanGraphs Francisco Liriano pitched the day after a loss. That’s really all you need to know. You can guess how the game went just by knowing that one fact. I have my issues with Neal Huntington but I don’t remember the last time two free agent acquisitions made impacts as big as Liriano and…

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Mets and Pirates have agreed on Victor Black as the player to be named late in the trade that sent Marlon Byrd and John Buck to the Pirates. The Mets sent cash to Pittsburgh as well in exchange for Dilson Herrera, which we profiled yesterday, and Black, who will either join the team once he clears waivers tomorrow or after the season...
