It appears increasingly likely that Brandon Bass' time in Dallas is done.
With Antonio McDyess off the market, Bass will probably get offers that are better than the Mavs want to pay to keep the backup power forward/center. The Mavs are believed to have made an offer in the $3.5 million-per-year range. Tony Dutt, Bass' agent, is seeking a deal in the neighborhood of five years, $25 million.
Bass was a great find for the Mavs in the NBA scrap heap two summers ago. He was a bargain at the NBA minimum, providing scoring, rebounding and energy off the bench.
But Bass would be a luxury on the Mavs' roster this season. Shawn Marion is more than capable of spelling Dirk at power forward. If the Mavs re-sign restricted free agent James Singleton, they have another solid backup who can play center in smallball lineups. And, assuming the Magic doesn't match the mid-level offer to Marcin Gortat and Erick Dampier is still here, the Mavs are deep at center.
The Mavs certainly have no bitterness toward Bass. Matter of fact, they'd be willing to work on a sign-and-trade with him if it would help Bass.
