Giants outfielder Andres Torres will have surgery to remove bone spurs from his left heel and will require six months of rehab manager Bruce Bochy said. The surgery will be performed Wednesday in North Carolina by Dr. Robert Anderson. “Andres has decided to have the surgery” Bochy said moments ago. Gregor Blanco is tonight’s center fielder and the Giants plan to activate Angel Pagan on Sunday. As for Gary Brown Bochy said it hasn’t been determined if he’ll be among the September call-ups. “I sent a text to him” Bochy said of Torres “and he said ‘I’m doing great.’ I think he’s looking forward to getting this thing taken care of so it doesn’t nag him occasionally.” Regarding Torres’ future considering he’s 35 and relies heavily on his speed Bochy said “I know that’s what Andres has been thinking about what to do here whether to have surgery or not. At his age and this type of surgery. I guess the way to answer it is when he comes back we’ll see how he’s running. It’s such a big part of his game. I don’t have the knowledge to know how much it is going to affect him or if it is at all.” When Torres went on the DL last week he revealed his foot has bothered him off and on since early in 2011 when he sustained an Achilles’ injury and went on the disabled list. “When you don’t play 100 percent that affects you” Torres said. “You see this year my defense hasn’t been the best. I respect the organization. I really care. I need to be 100 percent. Playing like this isn’t going to be good for me or the organization.” Torres was hitting .250 just .206 left-handed and said he couldn’t fully push off his left foot. Bochy was asked about Torres’ season.
