CHICAGO -- Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson praised Cubs starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija's performance after Saturday's game and again Sunday morning, but he also had strong words for the right-hander after hearing of a couple on-field snipes. Samardzija exchanged words with D-backs pitcher Ian Kennedy and third base coach Matt Williams at different times in Arizona's 12-4 win, and Gibson was asked Sunday if he'd seen the interactions. "Its part of the game," Gibson said. "Whatever. He didnt get the win, did he? Maybe the next time he should just shut the f--- up and pitch." Samardzija apparently stared down Williams after the end of an inning Saturday and shouted "What are you looking at?" Williams responded, "I'm not looking at you," and said after the game he had not said anything to prompt Samardzija's comment. Samardzija said something to Kennedy as well after Kennedy reacted to a high-and-tight pitch early in...

Kirk Gibson to Jeff Samardzija: ‘Shut the (bleep) up and pitch’

Jeff Samardzija has been piling up a ton of strikeouts as a starting pitcher for the Chicago Cubs this year, and that trend continued during a 12-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. Samardzija fanned 11 hitters in 6 1/3 innings of work, but he was charged with two runs that scored after he [...]

Goldschmidt grand slam leads Diamondbacks in big win over Cubs

It’s not often the Diamondbacks score 12 runs (actually never, so far in 2013) but Arizona did just that in a 12-4 victory over the Cubs Saturday night. Paul Goldschmidt led the charge, hitting an absolute bomb for his first career regular season grand slam.

Corbin again finds a way, ties D-backs record

CHICAGO -- As they seem to fairly often, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson's pregame words resonated even more once Sunday's game had been completed. This time, it was Gibson talking about starting pitcher Patrick Corbin's hot start and what's ahead for the left-hander. "He gets it, he knows how hard this is," Gibson said in the visiting manager's office...

Will move to cleanup spot get Montero going?

CHICAGO -- As much of a blow as it was for the D-backs to lose third baseman Eric Chavez to an oblique strain, the injury created an opportunity for catcher Miguel Montero. Montero, still working out of a season-long slump, slid into Chavez's cleanup spot in the batting order Friday, and the D-backs are hoping the move can help jumpstart Montero's season. "I think...

D-backs put McCarthy on DL, call up Delgado

The Diamondbacks placed starter Brandon McCarthy on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with what the team referred to as inflammation of the right-hander's throwing shoulder. The move was made retroactive to Friday, the day after McCarthy allowed six runs on nine hits in just 2 23 innings, his shortest outing of the season. With McCarthy unavailable, the D-backs called up right...

Because it’s all Carlos Marmol’s fault!

Tonight’s (well, yesterday’s, now) game was pretty terrible.  The Cubs did not win.  They were going to win at one point, but then weird stuff happened and somehow Carlos Marmol got most of the blame.  Of course, that is fair given the win expectancy chart.  Marmol’s wildness and giving up that monstrous grand slam to Paul Goldschmidt (who is very very strong and was pretty...

Diamondbacks put McCarthy on DL

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-hander Brandon McCarthy on the disabled list Saturday because he has right shoulder inflammation and recalled Randall Delgado from Triple-A Reno. McCarthy is 2-4 with a 5.00 ERA in 11 starts this season. In 3 starts from May 12-24, he went 2-0 with a 0.38 ERA including a career-high 18-inning scoreless streak from May 7-24. He struggled on...

Corbin named NL Pitcher of the Month

Let the honors begin for Diamondbacks pitcher Patrick Corbin. Corbin earned National League Pitcher of the Month honors Monday after going 5-0 with a 1.53 ERA in May, beating out the likes of Pirates closer Jason Grilli and Phillies starter Cliff Lee. The award comes a day after Corbin beat the Cubs despite his worst outing of the year, improving his record 9-0 and tying former...

April slumps and May not-so-slumps

Today is officially June, which means we can now look back at all of April and May because everyone loves arbitrary endpoints.  As of May 31, the 2013 Cubs have scored 221 runs while giving up only 210.  They should be better than their 23-30 record suggests, but baseball happens. The Cubs had an offensive turnaround between April and May.  In April, they were only 10-16 with...

Guillen on Wrigley Facelift: "It's About Time"

As the public battle as to whether or not Wrigley Field should undergo a facelift continues...the Chicago Cubs have an unlikely supporter backing them up. Former Chicago White Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen. "It's about time," the outspoken Guillen said. "Finally they start doing the right thing. It's 2013. I think the new owners and the new GM and the new...
